Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) interviewed this morning on CBS' Face the Nation. Schumer discussed the need for investing in infrastructure and speculated that Republicans who opposed a payroll tax holiday for new hires prefer playing politics over helping the economy. He also responded to accusations that the stimulus was a failure and talked about Social Security. More info;

1. To create jobs we have to get them back by taxing highly corporations that offshore and outsource
That will bring out jobs back.

2. What's Schieffer still doing at CBS?
Is he over the age limit for hiring at Fox? I know it's a journalist's job not to throw soft balls
(unless it's a Fox clown interviewing a teabagger), but Schieffer was pretty much doing McConnell's
job in this segment. Good thing Schumer got it and didn't play along much.

3. Equivocating on Social Security. For shame.
Social Security cuts after 2037 do not need to be on the table.

If people really do live longer and stay healthier, then all that needs to be done is to make sure there are enough jobs for them and that employers treat older workers with respect and accept the disabilities (like hearing problems, arthritis, etc.) that age brings.

The real problems now, the problems that MUST BE DEALT WITH NOW and that no one wants to deal with are energy independence and global warming. Yes global warming due to our reliance on fossil fuels. We have to find alternative energy sources that replace fossil fuels. It is not a choice.

As I said, Social Security shortfalls will take care of themselves. Working to reduce obesity and the sugar dependency of so many Americans will mean longer working lives for many. Strengthening and enforcing laws about age discrimination in the workplace will also help. Most important however is a concerted effort to create jobs that older people can perform.

Social Security does not pay much per month. Most older people would prefer to work as long as they are healthy enough to do their job in dignity and without pain. Dignity in the workplace is a big issue for older people. And our government could do a lot to improve the image of older people and their ability to work and take part in the economy --- without spending much money.

So this garbage talk about saving Social Security is nonsense. Save the jobs, reduce obesity and get alternative energy going, and Social Security will just be another joke of a red herring. We used to do air raids in school until we realized that neither side wanted to drop the bomb on the other. The Social Security scare is bogus.

8. the problems that MUST BE DEALT WITH NOW

Infrastructure.

The work cannot be shipped overseas. The $$$ should come from the Feds, since the entire country benefits (so raise some taxes for it). Since infrastructure is very important to our defense, a lot of money can come from the DoD. Some of those contractors that make aircraft to fight the USSR could be refitted to make and put up windmills and solar facilities, as well as build bridges and levees and such.

I'm sick and tired of any kind of sense of community being labeled SOCIALISM!!! The horrors of coming together to improve the quality of fellow citizens' lives!

6. First, we have been ADDING jobs and have done a lot already to help. But yes, more to do: First,
get rid of the Bush tax cuts for the very rich to pay for infrastructure development and deficit reduction. Two, eliminate the corporate subsidies for oil companies etc., tax loopholes, and tax breaks for moving jobs offshore. This will save and create jobs. Three, both small business and employee payroll tax cuts. Four, get MANY of the troops the hell home from the wars, reduce those missions, reduce other military commitments and bases overseas, and trim down the military in general. Five, additional tax credits for investing in domestic plant and equipment and for domestic hiring; Six, further stimulus should be directed in three ways: education, infrastructure including electronic/tech infrastructure, and developing green energy and green energy conversion/retrofitting. Seven, further programs to keep people in their homes. Eight, pressure must somehow be placed on firms to use the tons of cash they are already sitting on to hire more people.

9. More blah blah blah blah from Democrats who DO NOTHING about jobs.
Fuck Schumer. He's a corporate tool.

Maybe he ought to take his father to a homeless shelter for Father's Day and ask some of the dads if they would like a job.

Golf can wait, Chuck.
