2. I don't get it.
I don't think it is funny at all.

It just strikes me as vulgar.

But then, I've never been one that thinks that because someone uses expletives that it makes them witty or amusing or funny.

And, hey, I've had kids and I remember the frustration when they wouldn't go to sleep when they were toddlers ... but expressing 'four letter words' out loud to them (as Jackson says he did in the intro to his reading) never seemed like a responsible thing to do.

The fact that this book is getting so much positive attention in the corporate media just stands as an indication to me of the continuing vulgarization of our culture. We don't seem to have much respect for one another ... and the casual use of expletives and the lack of concern for other people's sensibilities everywhere now is not a sign of progressing civility.

6. I find it funny.........
Canadians are polite, but I have to admit that we use a LOT of profanity...as punctuation, as emphasis, as pauses.

I didn't, or tried not to, use profanity with my son. Frankly, he was a very, very good kid...and remained so. But he managed to use language well, too...this is the child who asked a primary school bully if his parents were married!

And a man who has twins has my sympathy; twins have more willpower than you can imagine.

7. Ich auch!
However, humour is a funny thing. K. didn't find it so funny and an article in SZ magazine gave me some insight into WHY. I'll be widening my sample in the next days.

My language can often be quite blue. When my kids were young we had a sit down discussion about language. They easily understood the taboo once clearly explained and NEVER peppered their speech with words they heard coming out of my mouth.

The only exception was my youngest calling his cousin an asshole for refusing to leave him in peace during a family reunion. The whole house erupted into chaos and my son used the brouhaha to retire to his room, close the door and continue his game. It was like he pulled a pin on a hand grenade, handed it off to mom, KNOWING SHE would toss the explosive off the porch.

8. Oh, I can empathize with that, too.....
There are reasons I don't attend family reunions. One of them is a cousin who loves to 'debate' ...and hates when I out-debate him. One of them is that I have too many relatives in the banking industry...the ones who are sure they are right, because....well, because they have money and have a REAL education.
