1. That's not good. Not good at all.
"Flash" in this context seems to be another word for "explosion." This is sooo fucked, and we won't know how bad we're fucked for years to come.

2. thank you for posting.
what does it mean? can we safely (pun intended) assume that these flashes represent radioactive releases?

3. For those DU'ers living on the West Coast of the United States
I would advised staying aware and alert about this story and any other radiation news which you are able to obtain. This Fukashima disaster is not over by a long shot.

7. Bwahahahahaha!!!
OMG! It COULD be the evil Gigantis, come again to fight Godzilla! It COULD be Rodan, seeking to kill the Great Giant Lizard!

Honestly, why would you make such an assertion? On another recent thread about the severity of this catastrophe, some DUers said they thought this specific clip just showed the morning fog coming in off the ocean!

We have NO FRAME OF REFERENCE FOR THIS DISASTER! However, denial--or indulgence in 'it COULD just be...'--does NOT help.

10. So.....
you're an expert on shrouded flashes of light? They've had all SORTS of electrical problems there. Have you seen high voltage electrical arcing before??? Matter of fact, my shop looks JUST like those vids when I'm welding something. No steam or vapors of course. But there IS smoke drifting about from the arcing and the vaporizing flux on the rods.

11. hmph...
I stand by my earlier assertion: no one can state unequivocally what exactly caused the multiple flashes, the smoke, the 'fog,' the various other things being documented by this camera stationed at Fukushima Daiichi. We can be sure of ONE thing: the release of radioactive contaminants continues unabated. To me, that is the PRIMARY issue and one about which we've been fed a predictable stew of red herrings. It pains me when I see responses that seem to minimize this.

For me, suggesting that the flashes depicted in this clip might be "an electrical transformer shorting out" either obfuscates the primary issue, or suggests that the overall situation is not as bad as 'people' are making it out to be. However much we would like to believe otherwise, Fukushima promises to be FAR WORSE than we can imagine.

12. Yeah, but...
... the unmistakeable odor of the OP is "WHOA! Flashes and steam! Everyone head for the exits!" :scared:

Fukushima is a bad situation - probably worse than we think. But hollering "FIRE!" when someone lites a cigarette is irresponsible and unwarranted.

6. Flashes appear to be external to the containment building.
So hopefully nothing too "hot" happening there.

However, that looks like a pretty bloody decent steam release, which is less good, but if deliberate, still far better than the likely alternative.
