Eric Sapp, American Values Network joins Thom Hartmann. There's an inherent
contradiction emerging within today's Republican Party. For decades now -
Republicans have been courting the religious right - claiming to be the party of
family values and morality - and that courtship has paid off very well at the
polls. But now - as highlighted by the emergence of the Tea Party - and the
passage of Paul Ryan's budget plan - the Republican Party has embraced a new
ideal...one belonging to Ayn Rand - an atheist who despised common religious
morality.

1. To be a follower of Ayn Rand - is it necessary to be an atheist?

Nope!

Just an egotistical idiot. There're plenty of those in religious circles too.

Besides, there is no such thing as "common religious morality". Hating it is like hating unicorns. Who cares?

2. I wish they would stop equating Randism w/Atheism
Ayn Rand's philosophy is about short sighted greed and selfishness.

One does not have to be an atheist to accept or reject it.

Bill Maher is an atheist and he certainly seems to reject Ayn Rand.

Nor does religious mean moral.

There is no contradiction because the "morality" espoused by religious conservatives very often has nothing to do with what the Bible taught and hasn't for decades. The Bible was just window dressing to make it sound better then it was.

5. He's not equating them
He's saying that if IF one worships Rand, that person cannot also claim to be a Christian, since her professed beliefs are antithetical to Christ's. It says nothing about the converse. Indeed, many atheists are Humanists.

7. AU Contraire
There is a Christian version of Ayn Rand.

Prosperity Theology springs to mind.

One can follow rand's teachings and still consider oneself a christian.

Using religion to explain why Rand was wrong misses the point of why she was wrong.

6. Actually the highest point on the snort factor meter
is just about nil to very high, when you compare it to the equatorial factors of the moon and points south, which, while on the subject accounts for all pearlescence on earth and accounts for the high populations of the loony bin; All, all based on Rands exclusion of religion.

3. And therein lies the wheedling needle.
Ayn Rand would have spat on Evangelicals and Born Agins; and they had no place in her "philosophy". It was perhaps the only concept she got right.

4. I heard this nitwit today
I wish you would have Michael Parenti on once in awhile.

Anyway, even though Sapp said that Rand & Christ were polar opposite, morality-wise, you know this slob and his organization will be endorsing whichever sociopath in next year's presidential election is attempting to unseat the devout Christian Barack Obama. Textbook hypocrites.
