The Elephant in the Green Room

The circus Roger Ailes created at Fox News made his network $900 million last year. But it may have lost him something more important: the next election.

Ailes had hired Beck in October 2008 to reenergize Fox’s audience after Obama’s election, and he’d succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest hopes, tapping deep wells of resentment and igniting them into a vast, national conflagration. The problem was that it had almost engulfed Fox itself. Beck was huge and uncontrollable, and some of Fox’s other big names seemed diminished by comparison—and were speaking up about it. Beck seemed to many to be Fox News’s id made visible, saying things—Obama is a racist, Nazi tactics are progressive tactics—dredged from the right-wing subconscious. These were things that weren’t supposed to be said, even at Fox, and they were consuming the brand. Ailes had built his career by artfully tending the emotional undercurrents of both politics and entertainment, using them to power ratings and political careers; now they were out of his control.

2. fox is visual icing on talk radio's lie turd pie. fox is an easy, lazy decoy
for commenters on left who rely on fox to indicate what the right is doing and in so doing often get their political lunch handed to them.

withouut the radio monopoly being completely ignored by the left- there is NO organized response to the radio propaganda blowhorn- fox would be nothing.

the main reason the left keeps getting beaten and progressives keep getting the compromises is they ignore the radi, where the coordinated repetiotion is done , where the alternate reality is really created, and react too late to fox, after teh alternate reality has been pounded into teh ear holes of 50 mil americans. the teabaggers are dittoheads, and they go to fox for reinforcement- fox cannot create, it rides limbaugh's ass like a tick.

3. Good points.
It's an alternate reality alright. And all the while our side is barely heard and then only when you purposly seek out something contrary to the official message.

5.  the media is bought and owned by conservative/corporate interests
private media's bottom-line is in line with their own thinking.... money first, everything else doesn't matter as much.

7. shame LOCAL sponsors for the racism and global warming denial until the only
sponsors left in blue communities are the ones that will scream back into the phone they are proud teabaggers.

once again, use the appropriately located limbaugh stations to picket and protest almost any issue, because all progressive issues are being lied about there. that is where the lying and racism and swiftboating starts. those are RW HQs and they need to be publicly shamed and challenged when they lie, spread lies, and attack our reps.

shame universities that use those stations for their sports broadcasts - none of them have 'mission statements' consistent with giving credibility to radio stations whose main function is to spread lies, distortions, threats, the rest of the time. those associations are used by those stations to maintain and boost community credibility while they do their best to undermine democracy and reason. students and faculties should demand separation from those stations- they can find alternatives.
