John Ensign's Sordid Tale: Ethics Committee Report Alleges Senator Broke Law

As unbelievable as it might be from today's perspective, there was a lot of presidential campaign buzz in May 2009 surrounding a trip Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., was planning to the early caucus state of Iowa.

Today, Ensign is no longer even a senator and, worse still, faces possible criminal charges in the wake of a scathing report issued Thursday by his former colleagues on Capitol Hill. Included are details not only about the former veterinarian's affair with his best friend's wife but his alleged attempts to cover it up. The report reads like a criminal investigation at times with a narrative that recalls a sleazy dime-store novel at other points. Read the full report.

"It is a cautionary tale," Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Ethics Committee, said in announcing the panel's findings on the Senate floor Thursday afternoon, a highly unusual move. "It shows that our actions, all of them, have consequences."

If Ensign, 53, had not resigned earlier this month, Boxer said, he could have faced expulsion from the Senate, the harshest penalty possible. Political observers suggested that Ensign resigned to avoid such a fate.

Tom Coburn Helped Cover Up John Ensign Affair: Senate Ethics Report

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Tom Coburn played a more active role than previously known in the negotiations between ex-Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) and his former aide, Doug Hampton. The extent of the Oklahoma Republican's involvement is made clear in a report released Thursday by the Senate Ethics Committee that accuses the former senator of serious criminal violations.

Ensign resigned from the Senate earlier this month, but had admitted in 2009 to having an affair with Cynthia Hampton -- a past campaign aide and the wife of Doug Hampton. During a two-year inquiry into possible violations by Ensign, the Senate Ethics Committee found that he violated campaign finance laws and obscured justice to cover-up his affair.

1. Attorney General Holder: as the nation's chief law enforcement officer I would like to know what you
plan to do. Will you be enforcing our laws or will we learn once again that the rule of law does not apply to the powerful?

2. Apparently this member of the "Party of Family Values" and "Party of Personal Responsibility"...
...suffers from the Gingrich Syndrome: "Too much patriotism."

Never-to-be-President (please, God) of the United States, Newt Gingrich gave an interview on the Christian Broadcasting Network in which he came up with yet the most novel excuse for cheating on his wife: He was too passionate about his country. Presumably that excess passion literally spilled into the blond Hill staffer (she had a patriotic job herself!) with whom he was having an affair. In response to a rather oblique question about his infidelity, which ended his second marriage and resulted in his third, Gingrich says, “There’s no question that at times in my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate.” Please recall during this period of hard work and misdirected lust, Gingrich was denouncing the equally hard-working, horny president, Bill Clinton, for his affair with a White House intern...(Read the rest of this post here.)

4. If Sen. Tom Coburn lied and helped John Ensign he's guilty too
If you lie to the cops or congress what do you think would happen to you? Obstruction of justice is a crime.

10. Immunity from criminal charges, or from senatorial censure or expulsion?
Remember when Bill Clinton was impeached for lying under oath?

11. Criminal charges
the Senate IS another matter.

They won't expel him. They can censure him. Other than that he has so much Christian Oil money coming his way he is virtually a Senator for life at this point.

5. Cindy Hampton
So I googled Cindy Hampton. I was expecting at least an attractive gal. But no, Cindy is not at all a looker. Senator Ensign, not only are you a sleaze-bag and a dork, your taste in women is pretty weak as well.

/No disrespect for Cindy
