Illinois Sen. Shane Cultra says during a committee hearing that tax credits for parents of obese children should be on the chopping block.

"It's the parents' responsibility that have obese kids," state Sen. Shane Cultra, R-Onarga, said Tuesday, when lawmakers took a shot at solving the state's obesity epidemic. "I think you need to look at a bill to take the tax deduction away for their child if he's obese."

He added: "In poorer families, they actually get money for their kids. I'd take that money away."

He responded to the story Wednesday, saying in a statement that he was only kidding. However, this video shot during yesterday's committee hearing by Illinois Statehouse News Service may indicate otherwise.

for higher taxes.

On tax day, every kid will be weighed and pinched by government officials armed with calipers. If the kids' body fat is within norms, mom and dad will get the federal and state tax credits?

6. Access to food??? What is she talking about???
Look. It's simple....

If they don't have any money, they'll not be able to buy all that food (whatever it is) so they will lose weight... thru starvation

Geeze! Don't they get it?

7. So...how's he going to enforce that?
Create a new state agency? Hire hundreds of new state employees to make home visits? You can't just trust people to honestly report their weight on a tax form.

The Republican party--bringing you smaller government since never.

8. Oh come on guys, he was 'only kidding'....
It would be hilarious if the simpletons were 'only kidding'. Just one more reason for voters paying attention to whom they are voting for.
