Sarkozy: 'Allied Forces Already In Action'

French president Nicolas Sarkozy has said allied forces are already in action over Libya, following a summit of world leaders in Paris.

He told a press conference after the meeting that planes were already preventing Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's forces attacking the rebel city of Benghazi.

Military action supported by France, Britain, the United States and Canada and backed by Arab nations could be halted if Gaddafi stopped his forces attacking, he added.

President Sarkozy hosted the summit, which brought together other European powers, the American Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and representatives of Arab and African nations.

Its purpose was to project a united front of countries ranged against Colonel Gaddafi's regime, and in support of the UN Security Council resolution passed on Thursday night.
