Gil Smart says that in a power-hungry world, only using less energy or spending on renewables can prevent the nuclear crisis in Japan from happening again, and again...

1. Gil wants to blame a "power-hungry world"
when as an American he uses 8x what people who live elsewhere use.

"C'mon guys, let's all use less power!" :D

7. Who knows.
Maybe he's 100% solar-wind-hydro powered. Maybe he rides a bike everywhere he goes. I would bet he's like most Americans, who should take a good look in the mirror before we blame our woes on a "power-hungry world".

2. Yes, if we could only find another way to boil water...
I'm so sick of this.

Most electricity production should be decentralized, anyway. But that would cut into PROFITS so scrub that. There are peopls who are running their households quite nicely off the grid, and with the WILL to improve technology it could be even better. THINK about what could be done.

Oh, and DON'T THINK about the fact that Atoms For Peace was a way to rationalize the expense of the MIC weapons industry.

Nuclear power plants as part of the nuclear weapons cycle, doncha know.

Keerist!! :banghead: :banghead:

4. Conservation won't work.
First of all, we can't conserve our way to reducing CO2 emissions.

http://www.ted.com/talks/bill_gates.html

Second of all, people just aren't going to conserve personally unless it costs them money to do otherwise. If you artificially raise prices, the cost of conservation is going to fall disproportionally on the poor. Already my mother, who lives on SS alone (about $1500 a month) runs her thermostat at 80 degrees in the summer time (this is in Savannah, GA) and 60 in the winter time.

We absolutely have to get to CO2 neutral energy production, and soon.

5. You're right,
...the cost of conservation DOES fall disproportionately on the poor, if we're talking about replacing old appliances... using CFs instead of regular and cheaper light bulbs... perhaps buying a new, more fuel efficient vehicle. All of this costs money people simply don't have.

6. 'Nuke' IS unnecessary, dangerous and foolish
The one silver lining to this tragedy is it will be easier for activists to raise awareness necessary to stop the building of any new plants here in the U.S.
