1. Who to believe about unions and the effect on wages: a drug-addled college dropout
or a former chief economist for the Labor Department and professor of economics at Rutgers?

One major pull on the working man was the decline of unions and other labor protections, said Bill Rodgers, a former chief economist for the Labor Department, now a professor at Rutgers University.

Because of deals struck through collective bargaining, union workers have traditionally earned 15% to 20% more than their non-union counterparts, Rodgers said.

But union membership has declined rapidly over the past 30 years. In 1983, union workers made up about 20% of the workforce. In 2010, they represented less than 12%.

"The erosion of collective bargaining is a key factor to explain why low-wage workers and middle income workers have seen their wages not stay up with inflation," Rodgers said.

4. When someone complains that unionized govt. workers earn more than private employees...
Here's what you should say:

That's what unions are for! To help workers receive better compensaton. If employees at private firms think that's unfair, they should join a union!

3. Rush's hatred of the word "worker" is very revealing
Limbaugh says he hates the word because it's used by Marxists, and he hates Marxists, but this is really about framing the issue of just compensation.

Rush wants us to believe that the employers are the only ones who create wealth. The rich and powerful are the only true workers in his world. Everyone else is just a parasite, and should be thankful that their brilliant employers allow them to earn some kind of income, as meager as it may be.

5. Was it with Reagan that suddenly the rich "create" wealth?
Edited on Mon Feb-21-11 06:45 PM by bigmonkey
I could swear I never heard that before the 80s. Amass wealth, gain wealth, achieve wealth, I heard those. But "create", as if wealth just emanates from them? Isn't that just a right-wing frame?
