In January, the state of Michigan broke into Wanda Scott's home and took away her elderly father, Walter Scott. They said she was neglectful of his health because she could not afford to heat her home, in effect criminalizing her for poverty. In this video, she speaks about life without heat, the experience of losing her father, and why she is a member of the Committee Against Utility Shutoffs.

2. The reason her bill is so high
Those older homes in Detroit are not energy efficient. You can shut off the heat for 10 minutes and you'll feel the temperature drop 10 degrees. The windows and doors aren't properly weather stripped and in some cases not properly installed. Proper weather stripping and plastic covering windows to keep air out would help with her monthly costs.

3. Poor Americans sacrafice the most right now...
I hope people who see this get the prospective ...
The Poor Americans are and have been sacrificing more than any other group in America during these hard times...Would you stand for this if this was your Mother of Father... Most Americans have no clue just how much the poor have given in the struggle to get America back on her feet... There life have been completely changes... I see this first hand when I go to the grocery store.. I watched a man trying to decide weather to buy that package of hotdogs on sale..He told me that package of wieners was supposed to feed him for a week.. I to relate as I am very disable though no fault of my own... Every day is a struggle just to eat and keep heat in the humble house I live in...
So the cuts to get America back on track have started at the very poor first again...
All while the Richest in America get to keep theirs and not have to sacrifice anything...
Just name one wealthy American person who has changed anything in their lifestyle to help????
How about any Congressmen???? NOPE.....
Appears as usual the first cuts made effect us the poor fist and the most of Americans always..
Business as usual today.. Just demonize those needy people as the problem and cut those benefits...

4. Poverty
IS a crime in America. But financial (white collar) theft is legal and encouraged.
Corporations are people, they have the power/money, poverty can not win against the almighty dollar.

5. I have heard this Bullspin since Reagans days
Here is Exactly what I said:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032608/vp=41560686

This Ass for a Senator says it... Entitlements are the problem..
I have heard this Bullspin since Reagans days...
Yep.. Government is to big for helping those who need it most...
If anyone does the math and has the real facts on what our Government spends our taxes on..You would find the truth..
Most of the U.S. Wealth is not spent on entitlements... These are small in comparison to where the money really goes and who decides it....
The GOP is protecting their investments, personal money, campaign funds and so on..
Bone Head keeps saying we have to be serious about cutting spending..
Nothing offered from his pocketbook... Just mine and yours....

ruining people's lives. Flood u tube till people get it and beg to make it stop at the ballot box. Then post the links up on NFL local team football facebook pages so it gets to the right people, label it under something football-esque. Then when we get D's back in seats flood u tube with Democratic success stories let's get history flowing back in the right direction this time.

8. What a cruel, heartless society this is. What sense does it make
NOT to help this woman to keep her father in his home, rather than the expense of sending him to a nursing home? I would prefer my tax $$ go to keep people like her father with their families. I wonder if that is one of those private, for-profit nursing homes which charges in one month, more than her entire back bill would cost?

Sometimes I just give up hope for this country. This is a crime. How many people are as willing as she is to take care of their elderly parents? It would cost the taxpayers far less to help her to do that than it will cost by what they have done?
