Last month, Jared Lee Loughner shot 19 people in Tuscon, AZ — including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), a federal judge, and a nine-year-old girl — with a semi-automatic pistol equipped with a previously illegal high-capacity magazine. Only days later, a Crossroads of the West gun show was held in Phoenix, and investigators from New York City were on hand to see if they could purchase guns and high-capacity magazines without background checks. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R/I) announced the findings at a news conference today: indeed, the investigators got their weapons easily.

Bloomberg played the disturbing videos at the press conference — first showing a gun purchase with no background check, and then showing a purchase of a gun even after the undercover investigator told the vendor “I probably couldn’t pass” a background check — and then blasted gun show sellers who “continue to flout the law” by selling weapons to people who “have no business buying them.” Bloomberg said the footage highlights the need for a “better system that respects the Second Amendment while upholding the laws designed to protect innocent Americans.”

2. One problem
those at gun shows were not licensed dealers. Is it onetime private individual his PI bought from or an unlicensed dealer? If the first, an individual can not do a background check. If the second, it is the job for the ATF not some mayor with his own problems and PIs taking a break from looking following cheating spouses. In fact, the Bloomberg got in trouble with the ATF for wrecking one of their investigations.

4. These are not gun dealers.
They are private individuals, selling some of their personal firearms. Just like you might in the newspaper classifieds, at a garage sale, to a friend at work, etc.

There is zero difference, except that they have all gathered in one place to do it.

On the flipside, at the Washington Arms Collectors shows in Washington state, you MUST be a member to buy or sell. Attempting to do so without a membership results in immediate ejection from the show. To become a member, you must pass the same background check that you would to buy a firearm. So Washington State Gun Shows are much more secure than this arizona show. A good proactive step. However, transactions in the newspapers, and other private transactions are still wide open.

5. so, let me get this right.......
.....in the state of arizona it is legal to:

buy a gun at a gun show from a non-dealer without a background check and without registration
buy extended clips for the gun that you just bought anonymously
conceal and carry your gun and extended clips without a permit to conceal

is this true?

anyone in AZ can buy a gun or guns and conceal them.....no questions asked?

if i lived in AZ, i could buy a semi-automatic weapon and extended clip, and walk around the state with the loaded gun concealed without ever having registered the gun, taken a gun safety course or getting a permit to conceal? can gun experts at DU confirm this?

6. Yup, and you can do the same in Vermont..
And you can do points 1 and 2 in 42 other states as well. (Most states don't 'register' firearms, and only a few require a background check from private sellers.)

10. so, in other words......the repubs want known terrorists...
.....to be able to get their hands on semi-automatic weapons and extended clips in 43 states?

how is that protecting and defending the USA? seems like the repukes want the terrorists to win.

13. let me help you......
....if there's no background check done, then people that would be otherwise flagged in a background check (i.e. known violent offenders and, possibly, terrorists) would be able to buy dangerous weapons.

14. Yes, 42 states have no background check on private sales.
A private seller is prohibited from selling to someone from another state, or to a minor, or to someone they 'know or have reason to believe' is ineligible to purchase a firearm.

The last time the DOJ looked at it, though, guns shows and flea markets were the source of a gun used in crime in about 1.6% of crimes. (40% 'illegal/black markets' and 40% 'friends / family')

8. In washington state you can
do the same by buying any pistol from any private citizen, cash, (but not at the gun shows) and the permit to carry concealed is 70$, no questions asked, no training. Just a FBI background check.

9. wow.....
....i have a feeling, considering the polarized political climate and the talking idiots like glenn blecch planting fear in the tiny minds of their followers, we are going to see more gun violence.

15. We've had that for 25 years.
Crime rate continues to decline.

We've had a couple bad shootings, sure, but most by people disqualified from owning a gun anyway. The guy that killed 4 cops near Tacoma in a coffee shop got his gun from a relative, for instance. Not much you can do about that.
