Ask the Romans, the British, the French, and the Russians.

Cutting foreign bases is just a step to reduce costs.

The elephant in the room is spending on military hardware. Why do we need a $40 billion dollar aircraft carrier (USS Gerald R. Ford)? Do we really need more $200+ million dollar C-17s? Should we be sinking more money into the F-35 program? Do we really need 20 $500 million dollar LCS ships? Should we build another three $5 billion dollar Zumwalt-class destroyers - how many of these do we need?? At some point, the bucks will run out.
