Obama will be giving his second State of the Union Address. Last month, the Obama administration filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization that China is unfairly helping its domestic wind power equipment manufacturing industry with soft loans, cheap land and subsidies, thereby giving it a competitive edge. Colorado's AM760 Radio Host David Sirota discusses.

1. Key phrase @ 3:40
"those multinational corporations have a business model predicated on shipping jobs overseas"

They are the enemy of America and it's high time we gave them treatment appropriate to their behavior.

2. But if the entire point was purely cheap labor why aren't they in Mexico or Vietnam?
Edited on Tue Jan-25-11 09:13 AM by dkf
China is no longer the low cost leader, but what they do have is a government that is aggressive about welcoming employers and incentives on cost of materials and other things.

And China is experiencing major inflation in addition to labor strikes.

It's not just about labor costs. There must be more to the equation.

3. exactly
for too long there hasn't been an equal playing field. Corporations have outsourced to smaller economies where low wages cannot improve or in the case of China a communist government that manipulates it's currency to undercut exports of other progressing countries. Hard to compete in that position.

This global market is sucking the life out of those who had strong economies but are now on life support. So the issue now is not competition but will our government protect us from being exposed to the race to the bottom. Hell when you have a politician come out and say that child labor laws are unconstitutional what does that tell you?

4. Picture the economy of our country as a human body.
The sword of free trade has cut into our heart. We are bleeding jobs. Blood (our jobs and our money) flows faster and faster out of our national body. As we bleed to death, our doctors stand over us poking in bigger and bigger needles -- in our arms, our legs and our belly -- and fill us with water rather than fresh blood. We become weaker and weaker, but our doctors believe fanatically that what they are doing will eventually cure us. It won't.

That is our economy on free trade. That is our government.

We have to gather our strength, get up off the operating table, tear out the needles and tubes and apply pressure to our wounds.

Don't buy any more of this imported junk than you absolutely have to. Don't support the system that is destroying our country. You don't have to march or scream or protest or destroy other people's property. You just have to start falling into the trap of buying cheap goods made by slave labor in a country with no regulations whatsoever.
