When I was laid off back in 2000, I probably spent a few hours one day. polishing up my resume and updating my stats on Monster.com, and defining search bots that would email me every day any job listings that matched my criteria.
After that, it really did not take much time every day. I would read my daily email of job listings, review the listings, and go search for any listings I might have missed. I'd also respond to any headhunter emails or phone calls. I'd say less than an hour a day. Beyond that, there was little I could do. I had a white-collar engineering job - not the sort of job you'd go "hit the pavement" and knock on doors around town to find.
I suppose if I was 16 again and looking for a retail job I might go drive around and go from store to store filling out job applications, but even many of those jobs you now apply for online.
