In these two excerpts from Bill Moyers Journal, Jack Goldsmith, former head the Office of Legal Counsel at the Justice Department, gives an insider's view of advising the President on the limits of executive power during the war on terror.

In the second excerpt, Goldsmith recounts what he calls "the most amazing scene I'd ever witnessed" — the night then White House counsel Alberto Gonzalez and former White House chief of staff Andrew Card Gonzalez, went to the hospital to try to persuade Attorney General John Ashcroft to give his permission on a secret surveillance plan, overriding acting Attorney General James Comey.

Every time I hear about that night, I wonder why impeachment hasn't been done already.

3. John Ashcroft's Wife
You mean she didn't get up and beat the crap out of them after they endangered her husband's health? That's what I would have done. LOL

This is the reason I really hate Gonzo--he humanized Ashcroft. What a prick!

As for "the blood of 100,000" on Goldsmith's hands--there's always an emotional justification for torture, but he's not a psychologist; he's a lawyer. So he has to answer one question; What was the legal justification that he found for torture? What cannons of our Constitution, our societal agreements, and our agreements with other nations allows for torture?

That's my question. I'll wait right here for the answer.

5. Let me get this straight....
You had INTELLIGENCE REPORTS AND WARNINGS prior to the 9/11 attacks that an attack was coming and did nothing to prevent it or to go after the suspects that YOU WERE WARNED OF were thought to have conducted the attacks, as we all were shown pictures of the culprits immediately following the attacks and by Colleen Rowley's statements and warnings...

But with NO INTELLIGENCE on any impending attack you acted under the assumption that there were going to be "bodies in the streets" and thus had to be able to torture people. People who it turned out, had nothing to do with terrorism or anything else.......

You have no credibility.

6. K&R
The 100,000 bodies bit bothers me. Were they actually afraid there would be another attack or were they planning one in order to prove their line of lies were true?

I don't trust the truly insane, so I'm wearing tinfoil all the time now.

7. That scene in the hospital room
sums up the right-wing revolution to me.

They feel that they're so right, so privileged, so entitled to rule that they'll devour even their own kind when they get in the way. Their own pro-right-wing fascists wouldn't give them EVERYTHING so they pull this kind of crap...

I'm no fan of corporate owned Democratic administrations but, other than Lyndon Johnson, I can't think of ANY Democrat President in the past or future who could order or condone such a travesty.

But maybe I'm just naive...

* Interviews: Jack Goldsmith on 'The Terror Presidency'

As head of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel, Jack Goldsmith led the team of lawyers that advises the presidency on the limits of executive power. During his tenure, he battled the Bush White House on the now-infamous "torture memos," as well as on issues of surveillance and the trial of suspected terrorists. Goldsmith resigned his post after nine months.

11. Colin Powell's former assistant Lawrence Wilkerson
I've posted the entire Bill Maher Realtime from Friday night (9/7/2007)which includes a very interesting discussion with Colin Powell's former assistant Lawrence Wilkerson.
Ralph Nader has some good things to say and Cornel West and Bill Maher try to stay focused while Mos Def goes off about the state of America.

I worked with Mos Def back in 1995 on an ABC pilot called "Where's Marlowe" when his name was Dante and found him to be a very intelligent, hard-working, modest actor. I feel like he represents many Americans who just don't believe anything anymore.
