Cholera gains ground in Haiti

Since October 22, Médecins Sans Frontières has treated 16,500 people for suspected cholera in a total of 21 cholera treatment centers across the country and the organisation is anticipating that the spread of the bacteria will not soon abate. Médecins Sans Frontières has deployed more than 150 international staff who are working alongside 1,000 Haitian staff to run cholera treatment programs, maintaining more than 1,000 beds of hospitalisation capacity across the country.

Official: Cholera death toll in Haiti has passed 1,000

Dominican Republic,which neighbors Haiti, confirms its first case

The health ministry said Tuesday that the official death toll hit 1,034 as of Sunday. Figures are released following two days of review.
Aid workers say the official numbers may understate the epidemic. While the ministry of health says more than 16,700 people have been hospitalized nationwide, Doctors Without Borders reports that its clinics alone have treated at least 16,500.

On Tuesday, during a second day of rioting throughout northern Haiti, local reporters said a police station was burned in Cap-Haitien and rocks thrown at peacekeeping bases.
