Commentary: John Nichols on Russ Feingold's Future

Russ Feingold has consistently been a progressive Senator to be counted on: the sole vote against the PATRIOT Act, a principled vote against bailing out the banks, a tireless fighter for civil liberties, and a man willing to stand up to his own party as well as the opposition. So it's no surprise that he's a prime target for conservatives.

John Nichols is from Feingold's home state of Wisconsin, and when he came by our studio recently, he gave us his thoughts on Feingold's race to keep his seat.

1. and you won't see Obama stumping for Feingold. He's out protecting Ben Nelson and Olympia Snowe

5. Feingold attended the Obama rally in Madison last

week. The president acknowledged him generously and Feingold appeared to graciously accept the acknowledgement and praise.

It is in President Obama's interest to have progressive Democrats like Russ Feingold in the Senate and not have that seat filled by the right-wing jerk who's opposing
Feingold in this race.

4. The problem is the goopers are nationalizing the election and we're not.

We only say that INDIVIDUAL goopers want to end Social Security, not that their party as a whole wants to. Michael Moore said we need national Democratic ads nailing the GOP collectively. We don't have that. We also don't have our party showcasing the worst of the goopers as poster children for their party as a whole. You can be sure that if the shoe were on the other foot the goopers would be doing that to us.

6. You may not believe this mattered against Feingold BUT

he voted against the $250 dollars to supplement seniors for the fact that they got no cost of living raise. I wonder if you can break it down as to how many seniors refuse to vote for him. I think he pulled a dirty trick. And if he thought it would put him in good with the fiscal hawks..well it didn't.
