Tens of thousands of Americans from all walks of life – including thousands of AFSCME members – gathered on Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, to deliver a message of change. The One Nation March brought together an array of union members, social activists, and human and civil rights leaders committed to good jobs, equal justice, and quality public education for all.
AFSCME activists stoked the fires early in the morning as they convened outside of RFK Stadium before marching towards the U.S. Capitol. International Secretary-Treasurer Lee A. Saunders welcomed members – many of whom spent the night travelling to the event – and reminded them of the importance of our fight.
“On November 2nd, we will vote for the candidates that stand with us and we will fight those who don’t,” Saunders said. “We are here today to let everybody know: We have a voice and we have a vote.”
Dressed in green t-shirts, the AFSCME contingent made its presence felt at the rally. As Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4) Local 233 President Barb Phillips said, “I’m here for jobs, education and because I want to see one nation working together. We need to energize Americans and start rebuilding our country.”

Four activists – including Local 1549 (DC 37) member Ayanna Gabriel, who is also a Next Wave leader – officially started the rally by reciting Dr. Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech while standing at the footsteps of the Lincoln Memorial – the very same place where the civil rights leader delivered his speech in 1963. Popular MSNBC commentator Ed Schultz conducted the event as numerous union leaders and social activists addressed the crowd.
The One Nation March planted the seeds of change. On Nov. 2, these activists and millions of Americans will march again – into the voting booths. The fight to put America back to work, pull America back together and keep us moving forward has just begun.
