The blowup came during a discussion on Thursday's edition of "Money Rocks"about whether or not to privatize the US Postal Service. Though all of the guests appeared to agree about the issue at hand, several took offense at the comments of GOP strategist Jack Burkman.

Burkman launched the discussion by saying, "most of these guys working in the Post Office should be driving cabs, and I think we should stop importing labor from Nigeria and Ethiopia. That's the skill level."

When it was his turn to speak, D'Amato started by criticizing Burkman, saying, "Jack would've done well without all the name calling."

Tamara Holder, an attorney who was also on the show, chimed in, saying, "Making all these somewhat racist statements about Nigeria is a spinning of sorts...this has to do with government waste."

Burkman then tried to defend himself: "Most people employed by the United States Post Office...are thoroughly unskilled labor," he said.

This proved to be the last straw for D'Amato, who cut in and unloaded:

"You are a nasty racist..that's a bunch of bullshit and you should be ashamed of yourself and have your mouth washed out."

When Burkman tried to cut in, D'Amato shot him down: "Wait a minute...shut up. I listened to your racist bullshit."

1. Buckman is a racist and also a full fledged capitalist apparently.
I believe he is also a elitist for claiming that PO workers are unskilled. I would like him to spend one day doing PO work to find out that he is, indeed, full of bullsh**t.

2. Wow, gotta agree with D'Amato
on what an asshole that guy is.

On the other hand, I can defend the post office WITH EASE!!!

Fedex does not go EVERYWHERE in this country - rural places, farms, Alaska, Hawaii - if you have an address, the post office will deliver a letter to you for a FRACTION of what Fedex will charge you to have something delivered - if Fedex even goes there! The post office is a great choice for lots of kinds of mail. It is a fantastic service that costs us very little, either in postage or in subsidies, for the service it provides to ALL Americans.

9. The US PO is one of the oldest, most reliable and beneficial
services that this country has enjoyed. They still are doing a great service for delivering important documents as well as a lot of service for pennies a letter. I'm wondering how advertisers small businesses and bulk mailers would enjoy privatization.

10. Wait, your point is that there would be nobody to deliver junk mail?
I'm ok with that.

11. I do believe we need to bring the US PO into the 21st Century...
But that can be done without privatizing.

13. I concur
And throwing people out of work in an economic crisis doesn't help matters much.

17. I agree
And throwing people out of work in an economic crisis doesn't help matters much.

But come on then they could scream at the Democrats and Obama and say "SEE MORE JOBS LOST" works for them on any number of levels. Not to mention how much do people think mailing a simple letter would cost if you only had FedEx and UPS to mail your letter? If nothing else they help control costs if these private companies want to compete.

I do think they could use some revamping sure but like any number of government agencies they aren't SUPPOSE to be in the business of making huge profits. Sure they need to make enough to cover overhead salaries etc and use even some profit I don't have a problem with that but like private companies who have greedy share holders and thats all that matters.

Go ahead privatize the post office and watch how fast the costs rise.

18. I agree 100%
I've used the post office on the east coast, west coast and points between. While some of their folks may be lacking in people skills. I believe their service is generally pretty impressive and still use them fairly often. We should keep them around awhile. They still provide services that the private sector will not.

4. I've heard the civil service exam is not that easy.
...but I've never taken one. Most PO workers I;ve encountered have taken it upon themselves to learn Spanish and at least a couple other languages. I, for one, rely somewhat on the postal system.

5. Here's your class warfare right here
My mailman is a hard worker and a really nice guy and here's a GOP pundit sneering at him because he drives a truck.

The Republicans are always screaming about Class Warfare. Well, here's the Class Warfare right here, making fun of the working man.

6. Does anyone in the US 'get'
that privatization makes services cost MORE, not less? The government doesn't take a profit; that billion dollar profit from UPS comes with a hefty hike in fees, too. And no, competition doesn't make up the difference.

Want proof? Look at what has happened to the cost of electricity. Look at what has happened to the cost of supplying the troops. It's an expensive way to save money.......and it's very hard on the poor.

7. Bra-vo

Of course, I was glad to see Chuck Schumer win that race, but once again we see how the Republicans of just a few years ago do not fit in with the current crop of "conservatives", and even find the rhetoric to be offensive.

Bravo, Mr. D'Amato.

8. Bullshit is the right words. I use my Post office all the time. Just yesterday I mailed
a packaged that cost me $12.00 regular mail. If I had sent it UPS it would of cost me double. I want these bastards to leave my post office alone. Not everyone can afford to go online and do electronic mail.

12. What is a "political strategist" anyways...
Edited on Fri Sep-17-10 06:07 PM by liberation
... the US postal service delivers my letters through rain, sleet and mothereffing snow, what does this jackass do that has even the slightest remote added value to our society?

I wouldn't call going to FOX and spout some BS talking point to be neither hard nor honest work. Maybe he and the anchor who is way too cool to wear a fucking tie should be the ones driving taxis, or maybe even that is way too complex for their set of skills?

Is this the "strategy" this jackass came up to earn votes? To shit on working people?

BTW, I thought the US Postal Service was mostly funded by its own revenues. How come neither of these jackasses were requesting most of Wall Street to start driving cabs, since they received far more money and aid in a single year than the US PO has ever gotten in its entire existence?

If the USPS is in the cross hairs then I expect these asshats to be really outraged at the waste and fraud that Wall Street is guilty of perpetrating on the American taxpayers in the last 3 years!

The people at the post office are worth more to me AND MY LOCAL COMMUNITY AND ECONOMY than 1,000 Wall Street thieves or 10,000 Faux News employees - from on-air "talent" (a word I use VERY loosely here) to the interns that stalk people and the script writers that pump out their propaganda all the way up to Roger Fucking Ailes and Ruppert Murdoch.

If we are going to get serious about solving the structural problems of this nation - both in terms of deficits and in terms of economic security - then we are going to need to start with a fundamental certainty: that which is purely entertainment (and Fox "news" is nothing more than Inside Edition writ large) is DISPOSABLE. That which is value-added SERVICE is much later to the chopping block.

14. Idiots on Constitution day
They should read it sometime and see what it says about the post office. Tax dollars going to the post office? Another foolish claim. Unskilled labor? How about unskilled blowhards on Fox that don't have a clue as to what they are talking about.

Wow, what a bunch of dim-witted losers,. Privatize Homeland Security?!? Yeah, that is a great idea,. we need more unaccountable for-profit goons telling us we have 'security holes' that they can fill for a few more billions a month,. . this corporate fascism is gotten way out of hand, and will be the end of the corrupt and repulsive culture that gave it life,. the system will indeed eat it self. Good riddance.

25. The reason there are so many post offices is because every tiny town needs one
a tiny town can't support a McDonald's. In large cities I am sure McDonald's out number post offices five to one. Also, FedX etc. make money because they charge you $50 fucking dollars for over night AM delivery of a medium sized box.

26. Of course!
Middle class wages are not for "unskilled" (fill in the blank) workers, whose wages, but for evil unions, would be "pushed down by market forces" and then we wouldn't "need" to import cheap, foreign labor.
