1. Watch the whole thing
It's sincere, beautifully delivered, on the mark. A template for how we should go after the Can'ts right up to Election Day.

16. It was a great speech, but the wrong crowd. He needs to give
this speech about a hundred times to Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, Evan Bayh, Max Baucus and all the other Conservadems in the Senate. Then maybe I would believe that he could get beyond just making speeches and into really changing our country.

He knows what is right. Why doesn't he just do it?

18. The mid-terms will be about turnout; probably every election is
He gave exactly the right speech to the right crowd, IMO.

23. I wish I could help this year.
But I just can't defend what has happened in D.C. Blanche Lincoln, Max Baucus, etc. have really messed things up for Obama.

When I campaign, I go door to door talking to voters about why they should vote for Democrats. I am very good at this, but I can't do it now.

Obama should have made discipline among Democrats in the Senate his first priority.

Compromises are OK, but having individual senators grandstanding in favor of anti-administration, conservative positions is not. Relationships with the Senate were extremely poorly managed by the Obama administration resulting in hopes raised among liberal Democrats only to be dashed miserably by the likes of the Conservadems.

Obama has only himself to blame for his failure to emphasize the importance of discipline and cooperation in the party BEFORE legislation is discussed in committees.

Harry Reid was utterly ineffective - - a total failure.

2. So I watched the speech, begrudgingly. Wasn't his greatest.
Edited on Mon Sep-06-10 08:16 PM by coti
He had some good lines in it, and I think it's important for him to keep reminding people of exactly who is responsible for putting us where we are.

But it was filled with half-truths and misdirection. Obama has a serious credibility issue now.

It was sad watching him talk about the health care bill and the Social Security cuts he's going to make (which, of course, he didn't dwell on or get all that specific about). It's funny when he "takes a stand" on Social Security by saying that no way, no how are we going to privatize it!

Sweet, though no one except for him is talking about that.

For that matter, I'm not quite sure why we're talking about cutting Social Security benefits and raising the retirement age, either, since there's no need for it and it'll only hurt the middle class and our economy. Seems to me he brought that one up, too. Maybe it's part of one of the brilliant backroom deals he is always making.

On the other hand, I'm glad he's at least saying (who knows if he'll actually do it) that he wants to put some money into infrastructure- you know, something useful- instead of inherently destructive things only made to blow other things up. It's not just important for us to spend money in our economy. We also have to get something worthwhile out of the spending on the other end.

4. WHERE?
Where did you hear half-truths and misdirection in the speech?
And when/where did President Obama ever say anything about cutting Social Security benefits and raising the retirement age?
It has been REPUBLICAN John Boehner that has talked about raising the retirement age to 70.
The only thing I've ever heard Obama say in the PAST regarding 'cutting' from Medicare was the cutting the WASTE and FRAUD out of the the program. Cutting out the WASTE & FRAUD is NOT the same thing as cutting benefits.

Anyway, please explain what you are referring to. Thanks :)

7. And I also wanted to say....
I thought the speech was pretty awesome!
Obama's got his groove back and sounded like he did back in 2008 on the campaign trail.
If he goes around the USA from now until November (like he said he was planning on doing in the speech) he'll get a whole lotta folks 'FIRED UP AND READY TO GO' and there's a good chance we'll do a great job beating a bunch of those republicans!

11. WHERE?
YOU say on that link you posted: "He's planning to cut Social Security benefits and perhaps raise the retirement age,...."
Once again I ask you when and where did Obama say that?
Give us a link to 'HIS words'.

14. His actions speak louder than his words:

Of course, you get to keep your plausible deniability until he signs a bill.

Mind if we get back to you with yet another huge "I told you so" when he does?

20. No President Obama's speech wasn't "filled with 1/2 truths &
misdirection"..it's the cheap shots on the internet that can't come up with anything other cheap shots that are guilty of that.

13. We need to work on that.
It won't happen overnight. And I'm sure you have already let the President know that we don't appreciate his support of blue dog candidates. If not, join me in telling the President that we want REAL Democrats, Democrats that support organized labor.
