"Rep. Jerry Nadler, whose district actually includes ground zero, has been a loud and unflinching supporter of the project. He makes the case well, and without tossing in wishy-washy qualifications":

1. I think the moderator had one of the best points.
It can't be " RW opposition" if the polls are so firmly one sided. There aren't that many RWers out there.

And, of course, you would need to include a large number of Democrats (Dean and Reid) as new RWers.

2. unfortunately the right-wing has been pushing a general anti-Muslim hysteria for some time

and it is getting shriller and shriller. Sadly some Democrats have caved into bigotry out of perceived political expediency probably hoping in vain that in the short term it will be politically helpful - while in the long term accepting bigotry grants legitimacy to the agents of intolerance and pushes the range of bigoted discourse even farther to the right.

3. If it was that simple, the polling numbers would be different.
Too many of those polled were perfectly fine with a mosque in their neighborhood. Anti-muslim hysteria in general doesn't fit.

4. This has become a political football sort of thing, contrary to
Nadlers statement that it isn't political. This shit has been going on since 9/11 and the GOPers and their sheep have been in the forefront of disclaining Islam. How can one forget the assaults against American Muslims in the aftermath of 9/11. People like P.King would fuck the Constitution otherwise he would keep his foul mouth shut.

5. Sounds Like They Were Trying To Cover Their Asses To Me
It's anti-muslim hysteria, however you slice it, however "moderate" it is.

7. well there are local anti-mosque crusades around the country and the right-wing media
has turned up the heat big time. On top of that, I am sure that lots of American's - the majority of whom are not following this story closely imagine a big Grand Middle Eastern looking Mosque directly on the hollowed ground of the former World Trade Center - rather than blocks away, " a multi-floor community center open to all New Yorkers, much like a YMCA or Jewish Community Center (JCC) with a designated prayer space (mosque) in one area to serve the needs of the large existing community of American Muslims in the neighborhood.

The community center will provide a place where individuals, regardless of their culture or background, will find a place of learning, arts and culture, and, most importantly, a community center guided by the universal values of all religions in their truest form – peace, compassion, generosity, and respect for all."

6. Have to disagree that there aren't many RWers out there.
There were enough to get Geo.W.Bush elected. Of course a great many voters are hindered by sheer ignorance and emotional hysteria.
