Excerpt from a TPM article:

Earlier this morning, Weiner and Rep. Peter King (R-NY) shouted and finger-pointed their way through a Fox News interview over a bill that would provide health care to rescue workers effected by the dust from the World Trade Center, which failed in the House last night.

King accused the Democrats of orchestrating a "cruel hoax" with the bill, while Weiner called it "outrageous" that Republicans would vote against it.

1. Peter King got his ass handed to him on his very own Fox network - how appropriate

I thought he was going to end up feigning an emergency and leaving because he was unable to get his tongue to work properly to utter a single reasonable argument.

Poor poor Peter.

3. The Faux "news" anchor
was trying to find a way to save King. How sickening.
The mainstream media is helping to destroy what is left of America.
Reinstate THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE.

17. Yes he did. Oddly Weiner used loud talk (mentioned in his floor speech) to dominate King
you couldn't hear anything that King said AND Wiener dominated the visual by stand in front of him

20. Awe-sum!
Weiner shaking his head in continuing disgust at King and underlining the pathetic voting discrepancies between the parties! Very niiiice!

Plus you're right about the visual, and it didn't help King that: a) he looked like a mob boss standing behind Elliott Ness; and b) he couldn't articulate anything substantive: "They have the majority; why didn't it pass?"; "This is phony hypocrisy!" (wtf?); "Here's the reason right here <points finger at Weiner>"; and "Mongo only pawn in game of Congress." Okay, I might have made that last one up.

2. If all it needed was a simple majority to pass, then why didn't it?
If the Democrats control the house, the failure to pass is on them. Republicans will almost always vote against bills that give money to the common man. You can expect that. But this was voted down by the Democratic majority and some of Weiner's anger should be directed that way as well.

4. Here is a NASTY article, but it explains why....
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 10:44 AM by Tx4obama
Excerpt:

Democrats are immoral cowards for trying to pass the 9/11 health and compensation act as a bill that requires a two-thirds vote and doesn’t allow the GOP a chance to alter it, Rep. Pete King charged today.

King, a Long Island Republican, is furious because he believes the measure would pass easily as a regular bill needing a simple majority — but Democrats fear the GOP might attach toxic provisions if they get the chance.

“The Democrats are guilty of moral cowardice and a failure of leadership,” King told the Daily News this morning.

“They put this up on the suspension calendar knowing it’s not going to get a two-thirds vote,” he fumed. “It’s really morally disgraceful… They are letting cops and firefighters die because their members don’t have the guts to take a vote.”

King acknowledged that the GOP — like the Democrats when they were in the minority — regularly tries to influence legislation and even kill it when they get the chance, as they are allowed under the regular legislative rules in the House.

The out-of-power party does that by offering a “motion to recommit” on the House floor which can send a bill back to the drawing board, often with instructions on how it should be redone. Lately, the GOP has attached language on abortion, immigration and other hot-button issues that divide the Democratic Party.

The 9/11 bill, with its emphasis on health, potentially could offer a vehicle to attack the recent health care reform law, though no one has said publicly that Republicans would attempt such a ploy. Republicans already tried to attach immigration and abortion restrictions to the bill when it was being written, and could again.

13. Republicans know that it is right to vote for assistance to the heroes of 9/11
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 01:49 PM by JDPriestly
But they want the Democrats to vote and pass the legislation without them because after the bill is passed, the Republicans will point to how the Democrats spend so much money. The cost of the bill will be placed on the shoulders of the Democrats but this important bill will be passed.

Republicans do not want to take responsibility for making tough decisions about how money is spent. They just want to be able to point fingers at Democrats for spending too much.

That's the simple truth of it.

I'm 150% with the Democrats on this one.

Attaching abortion and other such amendments is obstructive, irresponsible and wrong.

12. And here's a simplified explaination
From http://crooksandliars.com/

Excerpt:

When it became apparent that the Republicans were going to attach "poison pill" amendments to the bill that had nothing to do with 9/11 and everything to do with their political agenda, Democrats shut down the possibility of amending the bill by moving it to the suspension calendar, where a minimum 2/3rds vote is needed for it to pass.

32. The procedure they used prevented modifications but required a 75% majority
not a simple majority. They could have presented it in a way that required only a simple majority but then they couldn't have prevented changes to the bill.

14. After a certain age, you are responsible for how you look.
Think of it. You build muscle through exercise.

If you are constantly thinking evil thoughts, you will frown and look mean -- and as you age that look will be frozen on your face.

If you are constantly caring about people and loving them, you will smile a lot, and you will have a lot of smile wrinkles as well as a few worry ones.

Look at Mitch McConnell v. Ted Kennedy even when Ted Kennedy was very ill.

21. Anyone else think King looks like Brezhnev?
Onscreen with Weiner, I thought King looked like a mob boss standing threateningly behind Elliott Ness.

But on his own, he reminded me of Leonid Brezhnev:

King

Brezhnev

LOL @ LOTR, by the way.

31. Weiner did let King have it
As much as I love seeing any Repuke getting his ass handed to him, I can't help but think that any viewer of mainstream media is going to think that this makes both sides and congress as a whole look bad. I mean, after all, this is not about politics or taking sides - it's about geting help to the first responders. I read an article that has an extended (10 min.) clip from the Fox interview in it and the author comments that it would be nice if politicians could work together as well as the first responders did after 9/11. Check it out: http://www.examiner.com/x-23316-Madison-Independent-Examiner~y2010m7d30-Bill-to-aid-911-first-responders-with-health-problems-fails-to-pass-in-House. Kind of makes sense to me, although it is clear that the Republicans are responsible for derailing this one just like they did the one that would have helped small businesses.
