1. "The size of the building means something..."
Calling Dr. Freud.

Where would the US be without intolerance and bigotry?

3. There's something fundamentally creepy...
... about a man wearing a tee shirt with the letters "USA" formed of red, white, and blue elements of the US flag essentially saying there is no place in America for Islamic mosques because they mean we've been conquered. I don't know if this is officially a Tea Party event but it looks like the crowd is cut from the same cloth. Aren't they the ones wrapped in the Constitution? Does freedom of religion to these people really mean freedom to have a diversity of Christian denominations?

Then there's the creep show reject saying 9/11 was too recent to build more mosques. So like should we tear down all the ones already built too? I shouldn't say it out loud or these nut jobs will think to start a rally about it.

5. Middle Tennesseans for Religious Freedom
a group organized by students at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), staged a concurrent counter demonstration on the courthouse lawn. We met the mosque opponents at the courthouse where their march ended. Our numbers were substantially greater than theirs, as was reported by the local media. We met them with silence and signs promoting tolerance and freedom. The confusion in their faces was priceless when they approached the courthouse and saw 400-500 counter demonstrators.

Please see my July 18 post in the Civil Liberties forum, "Islamic Center protest in Middle Tennessee."

In a bit of irony, the fundies passed a law in 2009 called the Tennessee Religious Freedom Act, and it was because of this act that the mosque site plan was able to be approved by county planning commission

7. They're crazy . .
The proposed mosque is almost three blocks north of the WTC
site. I live and work in this area and believe me, I could
care less about the location of this new cultural center.

These bible belt people underestimate New Yorkers. We are NOT
u-n-i-n-f-o-r-m-e-d, as they are!!

9. Had I been able to attend, cheapdate . . .
I'd have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with these fine people who countered the ignorant and intolerant embarrassments to America who appeared in the video. Bravo to the MTSU students and those who joined them! I can't thank you folks enough for doing that. What's weird is that the gratitude expressed here comes from an atheist. Nonetheless, they did a good thing and should be very proud of themselves for putting forth the time and effort to fight religious bigotry.

Most Sincerely,

8. Seems to me that the only things that have ever "conquered" Tennessee
. . . in this case are Ignorance and Intolerance.

Fear of the Unknown is all that these poor, misguided people have to lean on. If 9/11 is an excuse to not have a Mosque, is Tim McVeigh an excuse to not have Christian churches? Would these same people protest the construction of a Bible Baptist ministry center? I believe they would not.

Ignorance and Intolerance.

I am very happy, however, to have read downthread that some college students were waiting for them at their destination with signs encouraging tolerance and religious freedom. If the person who posted that message can get word back to those who counter-protested these narrow-minded reactionaries, please tell them all that I personally thank them most sincerely for their time and effort. They are the pride of their state.
