You have to give Tom Emmer credit. When the presumptive Republican nominee for governor of Minnesota held a town hall meeting with waiters on Wednesday -- as part of a damage control effort after he publicly complained that they were making over $100,000 per year in tips and hurting their employers -- his campaign clearly was not screening the attendees.

The event Wednesday was supposed to last for an hour and a half. Instead, it ended a half-hour early, as the Star Tribune reports: "An hour later, he walked out after a bag of 2,000 pennies was dumped inches from his face by a man exclaiming, 'I have a tip for you too, Emmer!' as cascading pennies bounced in every direction and the crowd at a Roseville restaurant erupted into chaos."

Check out some truly amazing photos.

Here is the video of the pennies getting dumped, courtesy of The Uptake.

1. Giving a penny tip is the proper customer response to abominable service
I have done it exactly two times in my life when I found the service to be truly horrible.

2. Exactly, I have done it once. It really bugs me when people say they tip "only"
10% for bad serves, why tip at all? I don't/I won't!

4. A "tip" isn't a gift granted by a patron to a servent. It's a fee for a service rendered.
And too many people use a plea of "poor service" to be a cheap-ass tightwad.

5. That is what the employer is supposed to provide. Do you give tips to
cashiers in a grocery store, to people who do your dry cleaning? These are also services rendered. If the wait staff want a tip they should NOT provide poor service. AND yes I have been a waitress, and yes I know it's hard work, but you know the score going in , play nice, get good tips. The "cheap-ass tight wad" is the employer.

9. Yeah ...
That's what the employer is SUPPOSED to do; but we know he/she doesn't. If you were a waitress then you know that for many patrons, no amount of "playing nice" will garner more than the change on the $5 or $10 bill. I can't count the time that I busted my a$$ for $105.42 bill and was left with a $4.58 tip.

Maybe I just didn't play nicely enough?

14. I do know that, I also know that I will tip well if the service is warranted, but if
it isn't I won't. I started waiting tables when I was 16, it didn't take me long to figure out the ins and outs of getting good tips. Yes there are assholes who don't tip, but there are assholes everywhere.
I'm not asking for ass kissing just a decent amount of assistance and co-operation, hell they don't even have to smile or even talk to me, just give me decent (not even great) service.

16. Just try that on your dry cleaner.
"Well, yeah - you got the spot out like I asked you. But your attitude & presentation just didn't meet my high standards. I'll pay for the materials, but you won't get paid for your time & effort."

17. I didn't say I wouldn't pay them for their time and effort, I asked if you
would give them a TIP for their time and effort aka services rendered. If they didn't do a good enough job for my liking I would take my stuff else where next time. Why is everyone so willing to settle for mediocre? see post #14.

19. Not tipping at the prevailing local rate is doing exactly that - not paying for their time & effort.
You pay the restaurant for the food - you pay the waiter to serve it to you. If you think it's OK to withhold that payment to the server for what you feel is an inadequate dining experience, why not withhold payment for the food instead?

20. If I get the food, I pay for it, If I get the service I pay for it, that simple. Being
a poor waitress/waiter is not service IMO. I don't care how much you try you will not guilt me into paying for poor service.

10. Except ...
In most cases, the "Bad Service" had nothing to do with the Wait staff. Food took too long coming out, generally not the server's fault. Food cold, generally not the server's fault. Too few shrimp on the plate, generally not the server's fault.

13. I don't count that as bad service. I count as bad service a waitress/waiter that
keeps looking the other way when you try to get their attention, don't check if you need refills, never checking back for anything, I've had to get up and get silverware, straws, coffee, etc. THAT is bad service. If the food is cold or took to long coming out I do speak to the manager and I do make sure they know the waitress/waiter was great under the circumstances, and tip accordingly.

I went to a lunch counter with a friend from work one time the waitress came and took my glass for a refill of ice tea, she also took the glass of the "gentleman" behind me also iced tea. She refilled them both at the same time brought them back at the same time, glasses were identical. How do I know I got my original glass? THAT is bad service.I learned when I was 16 you don't do shit like that.
(I put gentleman in quotes because he really looked kind of unkempt.)
I've even had wait staff come and try to take plates before we were finished, (not even close to closing time) THAT"S bad service.
Just the other day my son and his wife went to Pizza Hut they ordered a vegetarian pizza without mushrooms (wife is allergic). Pizza came with mushroom, they explained about the allergies, waitress said "why can't you just pick them off" (she was not a young lady/ teenager who might not know better BTW), THAT"S bad service.
All these things were quite within the waitress/waiter's ability to easily correct but they didn't.
You can't tell me you have NEVER gotten bad service. If so you are quite lucky in that regard.

15. I've left a penny tip exactly once in my life.
Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 04:19 PM by JoeyT
The only time I ever did it was when the waitress started out by taking my order with "What do *you* want?" and went downhill from there. At one point someone at the table requested a refill and got a disgusted "Ugh!" noise in response. There was no way I was going to leave a real tip. If the service sucks, paying extra for it is silly. On the other hand, if the service is exceptional it's a good idea to leave a larger tip than average (if you can afford it) to keep it that way.

Cheapasses are going to leave crappy tips no matter what. That doesn't mean people that tip well should be restricted from not tipping well or at all if the service is exceptionally crappy.

Brilliant move, and it couldn't happen to a more deserving asshat!!

11. Stunts like Emmer pulled, really pi$$ me off ...
Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 02:33 PM by Kweli4Real
Waiting tables for a day does not provide you with any connection to the folks that do that for a living. Eating on a food stamp budget for a week, does not provide you with any connection to the folks that eat that way everyday. Living in a tenement over night (with your security sharing your quarter and two police cruisers parked down the street) does not provide you with any connection to the folks that live there.

In every instance, you sensationalistic a$$holes can go home when it gets too rough.

You want to impress me, live on the median wage of a Server for a year, living where that salary can afford you, eating what that salary can purchase, buying what that salary can buy ... and nothing more.

12. The amazing thing to me is that Republicans are so focused on
illegal immigrants at the low end of the payscale. Where is the outrage at the special work visas for Indian immigrants at this time when so many Americans are unemployed. I know of unemployed people with advanced degrees in math and computers who are desperately searching for jobs. Why are we issuing visas to Indian nationals to do work that our own highly trained, highly skilled unemployed college graduates could do?
