15. i dont get it
Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 01:10 PM by kuroman992
I am lost here.
Why did he say that obama should have started with single payer "instead of the public option". That is misinformation.

Why is everyone forgetting that Obama bargained away the public option to the hospitals at the beginning of the process?
Obama didn't compromise on the public option, he had no intention of giving us a public option and never pushed for it in the first place.
This is fact. and has been proven.
I and just stating facts here, sorry if unintentionally upset some with these facts. You have my apologies.

16. It sounds like you are re-stating what was in the video
The idea is that, _if_ Obama had actually wanted the public option, he should have started his negotiations with a stated goal of single-payer, and then negotiated down to the public option.

As Cenk constantly points out (and you've stated here), Obama gave away his queen at the beginning of the negotiation. Meaning, he probably didn't want to win in the first place.

Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 01:51 PM by kuroman992
I wasn't re-stating the video.
I was pointing out that @ 4:35 of the video he says "They started with the public option".
And as I was saying (and you pointed out also) they did not start with the public option. They never intended on having one in the first place. Thats all I was pointing out.
The speaker was mis-representing the adminstrations desire for a P.O. by implying that it was bad strategy that denied us a public option. When we know that is not true.

18. What's the difference?
Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 02:06 PM by ihavenobias
If Obama had come out early in support of single payer, the industry deals he made could have been much better. Furthermore, by starting with the public option it allowed the right wing to smear it and pretend it was a radical far left socialistic idea rather than a watered down half loaf.

By starting with single payer (again, not intending to finish with it) the general public would have been much less likely to buy into the idea that the public option was a "government takeover", etc.

Even staunch supporters of the health care bill that passed have to concede this disastrous fact.

21. Obama's stated goal, in the campaign and well into the actual
legislative negotiations, was to have a public option.

We can argue about how much he "really" wanted one, but that was his stated goal.

Tom argued he should have had a different stated goal, which would have led to a better outcome.

I think we can all agree on that point.

27. i agree on the point
Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 07:38 PM by kuroman992
But to say that obama had any intention on a public option or "started with" it in ANY way is misleading.
I am not questioning his strategy and it would have been a great idea for obama to have started with single payer "IF" he ever wanted a public option. But he didn't. He had no intention of doing the economically/humane thing to do (hence why single payer was never even considered).

He started campaining on the public option because he knew that it would gain him progressive support and then be attacked by the right wing and then he would have an excuse to blame it on something other than the fact that he had already sold it off to the hospitals.
He even got kuchinich to join this horrible plan. Which broke my heart to see Dennis do a total 180 like that.
My point is that there was NO strategy whatsoever taking place by obama like being made out on this video.
He and the administration/insurance companies/drug companies got exactly what they wanted.
More and more proof of this comes out every day.
Heck he even recently appointed a wellpoint exec to help implement this pathetic excuse for health reform.

36. I'll just quote you twice.
"to say that obama had any intention on a public option or "started with" it in ANY way is misleading."

"He started campaining on the public option"

And I DO question his strategy. and his goals.

43. I totally agree with all your points and appreciate them fully.
To put my complaint into better words,
It would have benefited transparency in this video if the point that "he never intended to have a public option n the first place" should have been stated.
Someone who didn't fully follow the healthcare process (which we all still have post traumatic stress from having to follow) and just watched this video and went by what was stated, would have thought that obama really did "start" with a public option and was simply playing a bad strategy. When in reality, he allowed big business to rig the game before it even started.
Thats what i am saying here.

28. I don't hear the majority of Americans worrying about "terra'ists" anymore
they're worried about jobs, the environment, affording health care, affording college and retirement...those are the things that effect most of us on a day to day basis. A shoe or underpants bomber is far less a threat to the average American than Offshoring, BP, or health insurance costs and deductibles are.

37. good job
actually republican moderates did vote for Obama. There's a website called Republicans for Obama. Some of them are ok with the health care and some of them did want the public option. They're lead topic is not the recession. Sometimes I think Hillary tried to warn us about "good speeches" when she was campaigning against Barack. I know in the future I will take with a grain of salt what is said on the campaign trail. But then you know the DNC will not support a true progressive. He may talk like one but in the end. They know they need high end money to win elections. Follow the money and you will see who your candidate is.

39. I think that Anna is wrong
Edited on Fri Jul-16-10 08:42 AM by SemperEadem
The guy to Anna's left is correct--there isn't enough information about the question and how it was posed to even come away with this conclusion because on its face, it's just a blanket question. There was nothing specific in the question to come away with being able to confidently say "6 out of 10 people disapprove of Obama".

and besides, is it better to have 50% of something headed in the right direction or 100% of nothing going nowhere? There is plenty of things lacking in the legislation that has been signed into law, but the construct on which to build towards what progressives want is in place. It wasn't before. Our task is to make sure more progressive liberal candidates are elected so that they can continue building the construct into what is needed.
