...said it's another example of Republicans defending big oil over the good of the "CONSUMER".

Just when did our status change from CITIZEN to CONSUMER?

Then later consolidate and eliminate the negative corporatists from the fold. One by one.

5. That "consumer" term has bothered me for years too

I do believe the "consumer" mantra was hatched as another wedge for use by supply-side ideologues as a way of shaping all discourse in a corporatist frame. What's unfortunate is it has been allowed to take hold and become part of the normal lexicon used by both left and right when describing us hoi-polloi.

I still fight it though, and whenever somebody ( in person ) uses the term ( either studiously or subconsciously, I correct them to use the term "Citizens".
