immunity, not to mention babies.

It is not safe. I didn't agree with the president saying the beaches were safe - that smacks against the scientific and emergency room reports.

This is a horribly dangerous disaster. :(

9. hi flyarm! I know you're one who has.
I saw people with their baby in the Gulf the other day (I'm in FL) and I cringed. I wasn't happy when the pres. told people to go to the beaches because they were clean & safe. Scientists are not saying that, and as others here in FL have heard, when the winds blow in from the Gulf, calls for respiratory attacks have went up. If dense oil is only a few miles off the coast, that means there's particles of it in the waters around it, and it's floating in the air. I am shocked that people were encouraged to get to the beaches because they're "clean". Would he put his kids in that water? I'd hope not.

I've heard that rental rates are being cut 25-50% on the Gulf side along the coast, and that business is heating up elsewhere. Let's just hope for no hurricanes, somehow.

3. we in SW Fla were getting gases in the first days of May!
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 03:19 PM by flyarm
I posted about it here on DU then..it smelled like the most rotten of Onions for days then turned to smelling like chemicals..it burned our eyes and throats , gave people massive headaches..and it felt like someone put bricks on your chest. It made many of us sick to our stomachs..I live directly on the Gulf..the smell was like nothing i have ever smelled before..it was nauseating.

The smell went from Tampa areas..beach and inland and went down to Ft Meyers area ( almost a 4 hour drive south of Tampa) ..for over a week..and we are 300 miles from where the rig exploded..I can't imagine how bad the smells have been up North in the Gulf!

8. I told my daughter and son-in-law the same
not to come here for their vacation (Naples). Instead, my husband and I are going to NY for an extended time.

BP can spend all the money they want to "promote tourism", but when the people who actually live here say "don't come here", who are people going to believe?

10. Hydrogen Sulphide gas
If you've ever lived anywhere near oil refineries, you've smelled this stuff. When I was living in Tulsa, you could tell when the wind was blowing from the west by the smell.

11. no one is mentioning this either in MSM
Don't want business to be unnecessarily hurt but they do need to test the air quality. They have been gas flaring which is bad and now I hear they have the go ahead to start burning off the oil. A double whammy of contaminated air and water.
