I name 3 interesting facts about the problem:

1. At present, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has 85,795 soldiers in Afghanistan and the National Army of Afghanistan has over 100,000, but they have been unable to prevent the production of drugs in Afghanistan and trafficking to other countries.
2. Russia is a major consumer of opiates, with 90% of all drug addicts using Afghan heroin. Experts predict that if this trend persists, in five years every tenth Russian family will have a member addicted to Afghan drugs.
3. In 2007, 509,000 Afghan families were involved in opium cultivation. This is about three million people (13% of the country’s population). Now, about 3.5 million Afghan peasants are growing opium poppies. In 2009, the Afghan population was about 28,150,000 people.

How the world could become if nobody stops it?

1. News Flash: That's how the world is. You want to change it? Make it legal, like coffee or wine.
That would eliminate organized crime and corruption 90 percent, overnight.

6. I wasn't aware NATO's mission was to "prevent the production of drugs in Afghanistan?"
Do you actually believe if we rid the world of Afghan heroin, "Every tenth Russian family" will be cured of drug addiction?
Opiate use has been is in existence for over 3000 years. I doubt the heroin addiction issue can be resolved by eliminating Afghan poppies.

7. The proper approach to this problem....
.. would be to spend a tiny fraction of what we do to squash the drug trades, and hand the stuff out for free. Even check and regulate it for purity and strength before passing it out. With as much as they want - those stupid enough to use the stuff will quickly become less and less of a burden on us that just want to get on with our lives.

8. Opium used to be legal here, too.
You could even get paragoric(tincture of morphine) across the counter in most drug stores w/o prescrition.
It was good for minor stomach pains, teething pains and headaches. A little went a long way and VERY few ever got addicted to it.

After the big illegal revolution, it was decided somewhere to eliminate it. No one makes it anymore, that I have found.

Can't have anyone self-medicating with something that actually works...
