This is from the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals Game 1 between the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers. The crowd ROARS through the entire singing. VERY powerful!

1. Blah..
Honestly---I hate all the pregame nationalistic bullshit...

Some venue's do God Bless America and the Anthem.. plus a fricking prayer... and of course they tell you to take off your fricking hat.

Oh and if you don't take off your hat---some freedom loving fool threatens to beat you ass if you don't.

I'm still a sucker for Robert Merrill.

Well done - Go 'Hawks!

3. For the gazillionth time, I am going to ask
what does the national anthem have to do with sports? I can understand it at the Olympics. But at other sporting events, I just don't get it.

I loved it when he sang the National Anthem.

I loved the old barn as well.

Best seats in the house were red line in the mez.

I don't get it. I thought that was a pretty lousy version. It can't compare to this:

9. I think he did a good job...
Anyone who can hold that "break note" that so many have stumbled over is fine by me.

I still think that the rendition done by Whitney Houston is the all time killer though. It was a conbination of Whitney's incredible voice, the event, (Superbowl), and that we wee in action at the time. But her voice did it for me...:patriot:

11. That version...
started an awful trend- since then, every jack leg who has tried to sing the song feels they have to put their own special flair on it. Sing it like it's written. Oh well, the Internationale (soviet national anthem) is musically better (words suck, though)

14. I think "La Marseillaise", the French NA is pretty good...
until you actually read the translation...

"La Marseillaise"

Let's go children of the fatherland,
The day of glory has arrived!
Against us tyranny's
Bloody flag is raised! (repeat)
In the countryside, do you hear
The roaring of these fierce soldiers?
They come right to our arms
To slit the throats of our sons, our friends!

Refrain

Grab your weapons, citizens!
Form your batallions!
Let us march! Let us march!
May impure blood
Water our fields!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

This horde of slaves, traitors, plotting kings,
What do they want?
For whom these vile shackles,
These long-prepared irons? (repeat)
Frenchmen, for us, oh! what an insult!
What emotions that must excite!
It is us that they dare to consider
Returning to ancient slavery!

What! These foreign troops
Would make laws in our home!
What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would bring down our proud warriors! (repeat)
Good Lord! By chained hands
Our brows would bend beneath the yoke!
Vile despots would become
The masters of our fate!

Tremble, tyrants! and you, traitors,
The disgrace of all groups,
Tremble! Your parricidal plans
Will finally pay the price! (repeat)
Everyone is a soldier to fight you,
If they fall, our young heros,
France will make more,
Ready to battle you!

Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors,
Bear or hold back your blows!
Spare these sad victims,
Regretfully arming against us. (repeat)
But not these bloodthirsty despots,
But not these accomplices of Bouillé,
All of these animals who, without pity,
Tear their mother's breast to pieces!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Sacred love of France,
Lead, support our avenging arms!
Liberty, beloved Liberty,
Fight with your defenders! (repeat)
Under our flags, let victory
Hasten to your manly tones!
May your dying enemies
See your triumph and our glory!

Refrain

We will enter the pit
When our elders are no longer there;
There, we will find their dust
And the traces of their virtues. (repeat)
Much less eager to outlive them
Than to share their casket,
We will have the sublime pride
Of avenging them or following them!

Refrain

Translated by Laura K. Lawless

The four stanzas between ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ are no longer sung today. I wonder why?...:D

is because it is Chicago.

18. This one is better
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISMyBvFOxJc

Sandoval goes a bit flat on his Low C, Third Space E. Also his Double C is thin.

Over-all I'd probably do a better job. Still Sandoval's performance sounds a lot cooler than that full of himself opera tenor. Stuffed shirt is what I'd call him.

And those two old farts who didn't do anything except salute oughta find an assisted care center soon.

20. In my mind
The best version is any one of them sung by the US supporters before the major international matches. Like before US/Mexico in Columbus or the Turkey game in Philly this past weekend or any of the 2006 World Cup matches. Looking forward to hearing them again in 10 days.

the National Anthem is played before sporting events. Otherwise the fans wouldn't know the country where they were attending the game.

Those were good Chicago times.

But, I must agree with the "Go 'Hawks!"
