So who died and made Tony Hayward the king? Yes, that's the BP CEO yelling "get 'em out of there, get 'em out of there" to the media who is filming him as he "works" on the oil slick cleanup. The last time I checked, we don't live in the United States of BP. Again, would someone in the White House like to step up and take control of this situation? This pompous ass thinks he owns the place and quite frankly, he does at the moment.

oligarchy why not. They are supposed to OBEY the conservative corporations aren't they.

36. Everybody is mis hearing what he is saying!
He was talking to the oil and saying "GET OUT OF HERE!!!". It is part of their new "Oil Whisperer" strategy where they send the CEO around to yell at the oil to leave.

44. The camera men and women were getting in the oil slick.
They were obviously getting in the way. No big deal here. I give the jerk a little credit for finally going out there. Not much credit though, but definitely all the blame. All life in the gulf is going to die because of this. How is BP going to repopulate the sea with new fish, mammals, birds when this is all over 100 years from now. :grr: :nuke: This situation makes me so sad for our planet.
I think we hurt her more with this stupidity than with the nukes in the pacific.

Some of the East Coast will also have beaches, salt water and brackish wather marshes seriously damaged.

This is the worst ecological disaster I've ever heard of.

11. No, I want him kept here to face charges for the disaster his company
has produced.

There are laws that govern corporations, and while i am no Legal Eagle, corporate officers can be held liable for what their "underlings" have mismanaged. The question is, what is in the license agreement? Are they liable under US law, they should be. The clown that overrode the decision that the pressure test was unreliable worked for BP, not TransOcean, It will all come down to the agreement, but I would not be unhappy to see BP sued into oblivion, there are literally thousands of potential lawsuits out there, and the company can easily go bust. Think about this for a moment, a US court freezes assets in the US that fall under BP, (this would include a lot of money Limbaugh has invested... ), and *poof*, BP becomes history...;)

6. I wouldn't mind seeing him in jail
if he broke the law or committed fraud, but in this case it seems clear he was warning off a reporter who was walking into the toxic pool without protection. He was rude, but I would have done the same thing. There is plenty of crap going on that we don't need to turn this incident into a corporate conspiracy. It makes you look silly.

29. I agree. Wile I think this guy should be in jail, he was not in the wrong here.
I can see in the video a camera man crossing into the work zone to get a better shot of the CEO fella, and in so doing almost stepping into the pool of oil. also the reporters walking backward in front of him creates a dangerous situation.

On another note, I don't know why this guy is still walking free. he may be the CEO of BP but that dosn't make him an oil spill clean up expert. his services here are useless. he belongs in jail, or as one of the inmates that is cleaning up the birds. Why does this ass hole get to go around an give orders? It was his orders that screwed everything up in the first place.

8. I'm certainly not going to defend this ass
but I didn't see him do anything wrong in that video. The first time he told someone to get back, the cameraman in question was very near the oil that had washed up on shore. It seemed more like a warning to keep the guy from stepping in it, then tracking it all over. The second time, the people he was saying "get 'em out" about were off camera, and could also have been getting too close to the contained area. Finally, at the end, as he was making his way down the beach, checking out the situation, the media people - especially those appearing to be paparazzi - were crowding him, running in front of him and seemed to be obstructing him. Clearly he was allowing the media to be around and to film and take pictures. It just seemed to me that he got frustrated at how the photographers kept getting in his way and decided to do something about it by asking them to wait to the side where he would go for an interview.

Did BP just cause the greatest man-made catastrophe in US history? Pretty much, yeah. Is Hayward largely responsible due to his policies? Yep. Is BP going woefully slow in stopping the leak and cleaning up the oil. Absolutely. But taking everything he does as an indication of him manipulating the situation is taking it a bit far.

15. Where's the outrage over this? Freedom of the Press is covered under the First Amendment.
Did this incident take place on a public beach? I have my doubts that Mr. Hayward owned the property where he was ordering the media off.

And our government seems to be content to just let this happen. Aren't our leaders sworn to uphold the Constitution?

22. He didn't order them off, jesus christ.
Dipshit in the blue shirt with the camera was practically standing in the sludge, just what they need, camera jockies tracking that filth all over the uncontaminated beach.

He can't force them off a public beach, it looked more like 'do this or we don't give you a press conference'. He COULD probably get local law enforcement to revoke press privilidges to the beach, maybe, because I imagine the beach is 'closed' to the public at the moment, but that's sort of a stretch.

Both guys he said 'get out of it' to were over the boom or mesh or whatever that green line was, and the guy in the light blue shirt was almost in a huge oil pool.

Stupid media. There's enough to cover here without flat-out making up shit.

48. I agree with you.
There's literlly GOBS of evidence to the horrific scene that's playing out, but with the crews trying to clean it up - and BP footing the costs of doing so - it's not unwarranted for this fella to direct the camera-toting idiot not to step in the mess. God knows, they'll end up liable for the dummy's shoes at the very least - maybe the guy's health if he decides that his impending death some years in the future is due to his exposure to the sludge. Man, the sharks here have really got the scent of blood!

No.

So, clearly something else was going on.

He's got a boom mike over his head, and they clearly came down to the beach with him.

He's looking at something and saying "get 'em out of there".

How does this translate into an order directed at the media to leave the beach?

“Yeah! You don’t want that oil gettin’ into your pores.”

“But there are tourists and residents walking around in it across the street.”

“The mayor decides which beaches are closed.” So I call the Grand Isle police requesting a press liason, only to get routed to voicemail for “Melanie” with BP. I call the police back and ask why they gave me a number for BP; they blame the fire chief.

I reach the fire chief. “Why did the police give me a number for BP?” I ask.

“That’s the number they gave us.”

“Who?”

“BP.”

26. "They're Fucking Liars." Cleanup workers were told it was just red-tide. mud,
detergent run-off. And not to talk to media.

When I tell Chief Aubrey Chaisson that I would like to get a comment on Barbara's intimations—and my experience so far—that BP is running the show, he says he'll meet me in a parking lot. He pulls in, rolls down the window of his maroon Crown Victoria, and tells me that I can't trust the government or big corporations. When everyone saw the oil coming in as clear as day several days before that, BP insisted it was red tide—algae. Chaisson says he's half-Indian and grew up here and just wants to protect the land. When I tell him BP says the inland side of the island is still clean, he spits, "They're fucking liars. There's oil over there. It's already all up through the pass." The spill workers staying at my motel later tell me they've been specifically instructed by BP not to talk to any media, but they're pissed because BP tried to tell them that the crude they were swimming around in to move an oil containment boom was red tide, dishwashing-liquid runoff, or mud.

Don't we have enough to be pissed off and heartbroken about?

CNN's retty boy Rick has lost a lot of my respect over this. It's obviously not a matter of the CEO trying to hide the oil from the cameras.

I mean come on...HE STOPPED at a pool of oil, with a pack of cameramen in tow!!!

It wasn't until a cameraman, pointing his camera away from the oil btw, stepped close to the oil and the cleanup effort that he chirped up.

43. I'm certainly not defending any of this
but at least from this instance, in my opinion, it looked like maybe he was just trying to protect those employees cleaning the shore from being scrutinized by the cameras. Its quite possible, and I'm sure he's expecting cameras to follow him everywhere, that he just doesn't want other employees to be harassed by the media and allowed to finish their job.

...this, of course, does not excuse anything else that this man stands for, and I think their should be a stiff penalty for what his company has caused. But I don't think its fair to accuse him of anything here.

54. Right, but
if that were the case, he'd be doing that all day. My guess is that when the one cameraman went back behind him in the shot, near the other workers, he decided he didn't want them back there where they might interfere with the work being done and decided that he wanted people away from them, kinda like police at the scene of a crime: they rope it off so that the police can work.

I'm not saying it isn't possible. I'm just saying what I think might be the case without jumping to judgment too soon. The cameras were circling him for sure, but that means wherever he goes there's a bunch of cameras all around him, so if he has some important job to be doing down there (not sure what it could be, but regardless he IS the CEO) that means there might be some interference.

How hot is it down there on the Gulf right now? Those guys must be dying in those suits.

manufacturing a story. The guy was trying to walk in the sand and the hounds were impeding his progress. But this was the footage CNN had, so therefore, it was the story. The newsworthy stuff would be the decades-long ongoing criminal enterprise that is Congress and the Oil Companies, but that would be a difficult story to tell. CNN offers you news the same way Congress offers oversight in the Public interest.
