Report on the Early Show about possible Federal mining regulation violations and crimes in regards to the mining operations that led to deaths of 29 miners. The father of one of the killed workers said workers there were told when regulators were coming to inspect by Massey Energy - which would be a Federal violation. Workers who survived the W. Va. Massey mine explosion complained of safety hazards during a House Committee meeting on Education and Labor.

Massey Energy officials continue to reiterate they did not put profits ahead of safety.

3. Guys, I've worked in the mines all my life; this really hits home.

I have always been fortunate enough to have worked with decent companies, who did every thing they could to look out for miners' safety and health. To see this type of criminality infuriates me, because I know from first hand experience how you have to trust the company you work for to make sure of your safety. They are the ones seeing the big picture. As a miner, you may not know how the ventilation process works in all of the mine. You can know it in your immediate area, but that's not good enough. Underground, you are affected by what happens in other parts of the mine, and you can get killed through no fault of your own. You have to trust the management. I never knew what a bad mining company Massey was before this. I'll tell you something I do know, about ten years ago or so, the laws were changed to where supervisors, foremen, shift bosses etc. can be criminally liable, and there are teeth in those laws. I hope those bastards are prosecuted to the full extent possible. It is hard watching these videos, knowing how my fellow miners that are unfortunate enough to have to work in this environment, are tough, proud, skilled, brave men, who have been taken advantage of for some money. Some fucking money.
