Another example of why those who understand the Bible has some really sick & disgusting parts but do not agree with these parts of the Bible still choose to call themselves Christians anyway? And in doing so gives cover in numbers to the nuts who think the Bible is really the word of a god.

If Christianity was any other group or organization this disconnect that people have that they can be part of the same organization that advocates sick & disgusting acts and its OK because they CHOOSE not to participate would not exist! However, call it religion and that somehow makes it OK in the minds of many people.

I guess I will never understand...Can't folks worship a god that does not advocate violence, child rape, slavery and a host of other disgusting acts? Why does it have to be the god of the Bible who clearly does advocate such savagery?

4. I never understand why people feel they can define others' beliefs...

I am genuinely curious why people feel that someone couldn't accept that the bible was written by a lot of different people and not pay too much attention to its inconsistencies and nasty parts but still admire Jesus and wish to follow his example.

In the same way I wouldn't tell atheists what they have to believe or do as atheists, I don't see why anyone gets to tell me what I have to believe or do as a christian.

Your interpretation of christianity makes it unappealing to you; your interpretation of atheism makes it appealing to you.

Just the same for me, but the other way around.

It's really only when we are so convinced we are absolutely and totally right in our beliefs that there is trouble.

There is no interpretation of "atheism" other than one does not believe in god. Religion on the other hand is a set belief system that has a rule book one is to follow.

Like I said before, if this discussion was about any other group/system no one would question that the Bible represents a awful system. Just like most people want nothing to do with groups today that might have racist ideas or passages in the groups bylaws or constitution. However, when it comes to religion then it is OK to ignore the fact that the religious book is for slavery, is for treating women like 2nd class citizens promotes violent hatred toward certain groups of people and many other disgusting laws & ideas.

I know that many of the teachings attributed to Jesus are positive & uplifting but that could apply to other leaders of other groups who have disgusting baggage that no one excuses because it is not a religion we are talking about...With one HUGE exception, if it is another religion like Islam then folks of another religion are quick to point out the obvious evil within that religious text & practices.

Beat on atheist all you want we are very use to it...After all we are the most hated group in America!

Sadly this new or neo-Christian is an ever growing segment in America. In fact they should just be called Old Testamonians. An eye for an eye. They certainly don't follow Jesus Christ's teachings of turn the other cheek, love thine enemies, do unto others... etc.. Its very difficult to follow those humble teachings. Thats why I can't be one. Very few can. Yet there are so many that vigorously defend their unfounded position that America is a Christian nation, even though they themselves do not follow Christ's teachings.

I think there has always been a segment of the population that is prone to violence. In the sixties and seventies they wouldn't be caught dead at a Bible meetin', but these days they realize how much of a shield that is, especially when those so-called leaders are all pro-war pro-assassination, pro-torture just like themselves.

Those church leaders have also met them half ways when they saw their parishioners dwindle. They know how popular anti-government rhetoric is and how attractive violence is so they accommodate the crazies (as Jon Stewart calls them). In fact its gone even further with places like Liberty University where they wean future leaders into the neo-Christian dogma.

The previous 8 years allowed these groups to slide under the radar. When Janet Napolitano came out last year and said these groups were dangerous she was forced to step back.

So will it take the murder of two cops to convince Americans that these groups pose a serious threat to the stability of America?


If these members were black/asian/middle-eastern any other than hite christians there would be a public outcry to eliminate whatever organization they belong to.
