Thousands of barrels of crude oil are gushing into the Gulf of Mexico each day, endangering coastal wildlife, marine ecosystems, and the workers who depend on them.

But instead of looking for ways to prevent disasters like this from happening again, those on the right who until two weeks ago were chanting "drill, baby, drill" are now looking for scapegoats.

We are holding them accountable with a new TV ad aimed at ending the push for more drilling. Watch our ad and help us build an oil-free future for America with a contribution of $25 or more.

Instead of acknowledging the simple truth that offshore drilling is inherently dirty and dangerous, Rush Limbaugh engaged in offensive and baseless speculation late last week, suggesting the rig disaster may have been caused by sabotage from "hardcore environmentalist wackos."

"Well, the turtles may take a hit for a while," Limbaugh added, "but so what?"

Then, this Monday, Texas Governor Rick Perry proffered a different answer, saying the spill might have been an "act of God" that "cannot be prevented."

The truth is, we know exactly how to prevent spills like this -- stop offshore drilling!

There are myriad ways to meet our nation's energy needs without offshore oil. But the chief boosters of the "drill, baby, drill" mentality don't want to admit this.

That's why we need your help to air this TV ad to end the irresponsible "drill, baby, drill" rhetoric once and for all. Check out our ad and make a contribution to help us fight for clean energy.

There are all sorts of ways to reduce our consumption of oil: converting to plug-in hybrid vehicles, making public transit more accessible, electrifying our nation's rail system, and strengthening fuel economy standards for cars. Any one of these alone would eliminate all of the oil demand that could be met by new offshore drilling. Paired with other solutions these policies can lead to an oil-free United States within a generation.

So why are some politicians, including President Barack Obama, still unwilling to permanently take offshore oil off the table?

We need to be clear that offshore drilling is unacceptable, so we can make way for an oil-free future. Will you join us in spreading this message by making a contribution of $25 or more to Friends of the Earth today?

Thank you in advance for your support. We will keep you updated about the ad and all of our other work in response to this spill.
