A conservative "New Democracy" government was elected in 2004. They went on a spending spree to ensure the 2004 Olympics were a grand party and great success for the very wealthy, but the party never ended. They spent themselves into huge debt while the poor and middle class had services and spending cut to pay for the party.
In 2009, the conservative government saw the writing was on the wall and dissolved parliament 2 years early - and suffered a crushing defeat.
It was largely perceived that they had abandoned government because of the crippling debt they had accumulated.
That's the background to these riots. The poor and middle-class, who had long suffered at the hands on the conservative New Democracy party, are now being asked to sacrifice what little they have left while the rich who partied all through the previous 6 years are getting off scot free.
Sound familiar?
