And you thought Bachmann and Palin were crazy.

1. That is quite disturbing.
I suspect that Jon Voight knows how absurd his message is, but does not care.

If someone had been given the opportunity on national television to say something even remotely negative about Bush, the network would have banned them forever.

Of course that wont happen here.

Wow.

6. Matt Lauer tried to rip Kitty Kelley a new asshole for WRITING A BOOK about Bush.
She didn't go on the Today Show and read "a letter to the American People." She didn't even read from her book:

...and I remember Lauer, eyes narrowing, taking his voice down to a slow, measured snarl, spitting out "How dare you write a book like this about a sitting president during a time of WAR?"

She smiled at him like he was crazy and basically said "everything in the book HAPPENED, that's how."

49. She has also reconciled with him in the past
Only to split with him again once he started being an asshole again. The last time he said she had mental problems (pot/kettle). So the best you can say about their relationship is that they occassionally manage to tolerate each other for short periods of time.

I have no idea what she said. I've never known her to be at all political other than to comment on what the US provides in aid to certain countries, but I can't imagine it being in the same ballpark as the vitriol that her dad spews.

4. What happened to this guy?
Edited on Sun Apr-11-10 02:27 PM by tempelton
He used to behave like a human being once upon a time. And I don't say that simply because back in the 70's he was a liberal - but rather because he used to approach political issues with some thought and some compassion (I'm basing that on interviews and his passionate advocacy of Coming Home). Somewhere along the way his compassion bled dry and was replaced by a cold, steely indifference to reality.

He has spoken recently about how in the 1970's he was being manipulated into believing the things he believed. I guess it never occured to him that maybe he is being manipulated now though (by douches like Huckabee).

He just comes across an unhinged, self-important and deeply paranoid conspiracy-theorist-lunatic. I say unhinged because he considers Obama arrogant, which is frankly just a pathetic statment. I say self-important because consider the REAL arrogance of this unelected thug in thinking himself important enough to read out his thoughts on the right-wing network. And I say paranoid lunatic because of his fact-free allegation that Obama is 'trained' and a 'Marxist' etc. Not one shred of proof or evidence does he offer - because he has zero in his arsenal.

And just think, that dribble he read out was too complex for him to ad lib or remember. In fact, considering his disdain for the democratically elected President of the United States and given his frequently voiced support for finding ways to get rid of Obama, I think it is fair to say that Voight is a fascist-leaning, anti-democracy, anti-American douchebag of the highest order who should spend more time trying to be a good father (just ask Angelina!) and less trying to extol the virtues of right-wing militia and racist types.

He really is a nasty, emtpy and void son of a bitch.

7. No offense, but this guy has been showing symptoms of mental illness for a while.
A lot of people in our great country do not seem to understand that our brain, because it is a biological organ, it is prone to disease too. John Voight seems truly deeply disturbed, and no one seems to be offering him the help he needs. The nonsense he has been spewing for the better part of the past decade seem like cries for help more than anything...

THey lost their minds and couldn't take it and there are many more all over the television pretending but they are in the background calling the Pres the N word and putting a lot of the money that bush and cheney help them steal from us here and in Iraq.

Where is the 9 billion and other billions? They are using it against us and some of these stupid people who support the CONS can't see it yet. They really believe that the economy became terrible because a black man was elected President. Stupid asses. There shell game has started coming to an end and some of these stupid ass people can't see that if they win again they will really be through, done,it will be over with.

For you stupid ass people,WE ARE NOT LIVING IN THE 1800'S those rules don't fit this country anymore. But actors have a platform upon which to speak and they have the free right to do so. No actor should be ashamed to say what they feel. Is George Clooney an idiot? I think not. Was Charlie Chaplin an idiot? Brad Pitt? What about other political causes? Should actors not get involved. Should John Lennon have just shut up and sing for you? Or Bono? Or Peter Gabriel? Should Sean Penn shut up? In a free society everyone should be able to use the microphone or pedestal if they have it to bring attention to their cause. Jon Voight's opinion sucks but he is entitled to it. A few years back people told the Dixie Chicks to shut up and sing. I'm glad the Dixie Chicks gave those people a big fuck you. The Dixie Chicks have a treasure greater than any money they lost. They have integrity and their souls intact. True liberals don't tell people to shut up. They provide a better argument.

23. So true...
... Chris Hitchens was another one of those, although he has made some good movements back from the dark side since then. He is not so easy to pidgeon-hole. However, people like Voight - and Miller and James Woods and others - were just looking for an excuse I think. Besides being a terrible tragedy and outrage, 9/11 was also the world's biggest excuse - for war mongers, apologists, aging liberals who wanted to cash in with conservatism and conspiracy theorists (who could forget them!)

The people I know who "flip" like that tended to be "earnest but shallow" in their younger days, and when finally some event does cause a crisis of confindence, they're very susceptable to a new "guru" who has all the answers. And these days, paranoid wingnut gurus are no farther than your radio dial.

It may not fit everyone, but it fits enough that I've noticed the pattern.

That the U.S. will become a third world country... classic projection. That's the goal of the corporatists... they LOVE third world countries and that's the image they want for the entire world... a poor, powerless slave class, and a rich, corrupt class in control and above the law. That's the final result and I daresay the end goal of their free market fundamentalism, senseless deregulation, and rampant privatization.

48. Early Alzheimer's .......
I predict that in the next few years we will be told that Jon Voight has Alzheimer's. His current bizarre behavior and his sudden turn to the right wing conservative mind set could be symptoms of someone who is developing Alzheimer's. This disease starts much earlier than people realize and can have a profound effect on the thinking and judgment of those who are stricken. I believe Reagan was thus afflicted even before he was President. Also, it was no surprise to me when Charlton Heston announced he had Alzheimer's. I had thought he had exhibited signs of the disease for years. It seems as though as people even just start to begin to lose their faculties, the mind becomes less tolerant, more fearful of change and strangers, desperately clinging to "old fashioned" values. Now, granted, one cannot say all Alzheimer's victims will become conservatives, or that all conservatives are early stage Alzheimer's patients. But it would be interesting to do a study of the disease and see how it affects social and political thought in it's earliest stages.

53. That's certainly one possibility.
Edited on Mon Apr-12-10 02:26 AM by BlueMTexpat
His elevator either stops several floors from the top now - or overshoots the top altogether - and it is tragic because he was a fairly reasonable person in his youth.
I witnessed one of my favorite and most beloved uncles literally become bipolar towards my aunt in the early stages of Alheimers, which we didn't realize at the time. It was like he became a totally different person. My cousin, his son, who is younger than I (I'm in my 60s and he's in his 50s), is manifesting alarmingly similar behavior, even to the point of burning down the family home, although he was also a very gentle person in his youth. Chemical changes in the brain caused by Alzheimers, or aging itself, have a lot to answer for.
I too would love to see a serious study done, such as you suggest. One problem is that Alzheimers isn't often recognized in its earliest stages.

57. Creepiest quote: "They will plant their own bullies amongst us. We can weed them out."
Dude gives me chills how he goes all McCarthy on us in his closing. Here's the actual wording:

"The opposition will continue their tactics. They will lie and plant their own bullies amongst us. Everyone must pay close attention to who stands next them. We can weed out the liars and agitators. Let us all stay in God's light. Let no man put asunder. We can and we will prevail."

58. A rethug colleague actually sent Voight's letter to me via e-mail this morning...
She has hired me for a fair amount of wedding work in the past, which is an important source of summer income for me; so I'd prefer not to completely burn bridges. But at the same time, the tone of this letter and its presumptuous assertion that Obama is going "against the will of the American people", as if I was not an American person...well, you get my drift.

As much as I hate to reply to something that reads like the Nigerian bank scam letter with better spelling, I'm compelled to protest pro-fascist assholism.

"An American's Letter to Jon Voight"

"RE your Letter to the American People, April 10, 2010:

You began your little self-serving dissertation predictably – as those of your mindset have a tendency to do.

“In one year, the American people are witnessing the greatest lie that is cleverly orchestrated by President Obama and his whole administration. The lie is a potent aggression that feeds the needs of people who either have not educated themselves enough to understand the assault upon us all or the very poor and needy who live to be taken care of.”

The thing is, sir, that most Americans understand that their collective responsibility as citizens goes beyond merely keeping a nation healthy and fed. That responsibility includes empathy and compassion, a desire to extend a helping hand to those in need, a determination to lift those who have fallen by the wayside – often through no fault of their own – and render whatever assistance is necessary to get them back on their feet.

Your use of the phrase “the poor and needy who live to be taken care of” is a pitifully sad commentary on yourself as a human being, as well as an American. It implies that there are those whose very existence is nothing more than a drain on society as a whole, people who have nothing to contribute – nothing to say that is worth listening to, nothing to teach that is of value, nothing to usefully add to the lives of those around them.

I have never met such a person, sir – and if you believe you have, I would suggest that you just couldn’t be bothered to look beyond your own inflated sense of yourself in order to see the true worth that resides in others."

64. A letter?
Edited on Tue Apr-13-10 08:27 AM by Caretha
That 'weren't' no fuckin' letter. That was a rant with every scary word/phrase an unsettled mind could think up and string together into a sentence. No factual basis for the slurs he spewed against the President, just unjustified fear-mongering.

I think like several other previous posters, that the man has some medical disorder affecting his ability to think or reason.

If I didn't know better, I'd think that somehow the fluoride in the water has begun to have its toll on part of the American population's mental processes.

69. Joh Voight Is Simply Another Right-Wing Douchebag Puppet
John Voight is nothing but another right-wing douchebag stooge. Socialist, Marxist, Communist, blah, blah, blah.... These far-right fucktards are all parroting from the same script. Never mind the fact that 8 years of total incompetence and failure nearly took us into a depression, botched foreign policy to the point America was the hated most disrespected nation on earth, and deregulation that has handed the corporations the deed to this nation. No wonder Angelina can't stand this douchebag
