REPORT: "Fair and balanced" Fox News aggressively promotes "tea party" protests

April 08, 2009 3:58 pm ET

SUMMARY: Despite its repeated insistence that its coverage is "fair and balanced" and its invitation to viewers to "say 'no' to biased media," Fox News has frequently aired segments encouraging viewers to get involved with "tea party" protests across the country, which the channel has described as primarily a response to President Obama's fiscal policies. Media Matters has compiled an analysis of Fox News' promotion of these events, http://mediamatters.org/reports/200904080025">here.

More up to date research on how Faux are currently promoting the "Tea Party" here: http://mediamatters.org/research/201003270028

1. I would like to investigate what you are saying before I condemn anyone
Hey Democrat!!!!! Even Rupert Murdoch is not stupid enough to just condemn his own people without investigating. Would have been nice if you had the same sense about you when it came to ACORN.

*** Sorry, not meaning to hijaack this thread, but just finished watching Rachel Maddow's Acorn piece ***

4. No need to apologize
Edited on Wed Apr-07-10 02:17 PM by Turborama
I totally agree and seeing as it was Faux who were a main instigator in the decimation of ACORN it's tangentially related.

8. You don't have to apologize.
Democrats betrayed ACORN by going along with the lies told by Fox and spread by the NYT and CNN also. Only Rachel Maddow spoke out against them back then.

A majority of Democrats in Congress voted with Republicans to defund them, without an investigation.

The outrage you are feeling is justified and I hope it spreads far and wide.

Brad at Bradblog has covered this from the beginning.

The NYT which reported the lies originally, refused last week to correct information they wrongly reported on. After a lot of pressure from the public, they issued a half-hearted apology which was not in any way adequate.

But public pressure does move them a little. So I hope there is a lot of it, and on FOX.

5. Murdoch doesn't run Fox News, Roger Ailes does.
Murdoch could give a flying f*ck what Fox News does as long as it makes him money.

14. Not necessarily true...
Murdoch was known to have directly intervened in the transfer of his British papers (The Times, The Sun) support to Labour in the run up to 1997's election (when Blair became PM). He is also known to have played his hand against Gordon Brown since. People have documented his intervention quite plainly. I don't know for a fact that he involves himself with the editorial side of Fox, but it seems likely to me (given his track record). I would guess it is indeed primarily about the G's though, as you suggest (with ideology following in a distant second).

He is, above all else, an opportunistic little shit.

6. Support the Tea Party? They created the Tea Party.
I thought the Tea Party was a wholly owned subsidiary of Fox News.

Follow the money. Who bankrolls the Tea Party? Fox news gives them a helluva lot of free media coverage. How many dollars is that worth?

7. So just WHO has control over his cable network then?
If he doesn't agree with this - why doesn't he fire Ailes. Is he afraid of him.

10. Yes, he might very well be afraid.
After all Ailes probably has enough dirt to sink the entire network not to mention the possibility of the feds being dragged into it if he can provide evidence for that which many of us suspect which is fox has been over the years conspiring with the RNC and other republicans in general behind closed doors to shape the news.
Evidence of that nature could very well setup for an order that pieces of News Corp be sold off by the feds much like how ATT was broken up.

11. they crossed into FBI marked domestic terrorism territory
and they promptly soiled their panties. It's clear to me that the cons are in panic mode and trying to put the "crazy" toothpaste back in the "crazy" tube. Good luck with that one! LOL! It's fun to watch first Coburn then Murdoch ;)
My guess it has to do with national security not a newly found sense of responsibility. I personally would love to see them rot in Gittmo for fermenting domestic terrorism and inciting to sedition. but more importantly this will blow the conservative base apart! It's going to be an interesting election season!

ps. To those who think Obama betrayed progressives, I think the complete disintegration of the conservative movement would be the sort of result no liberal has achieved since FDR.

19. I doubt it will faze the base, now the ones it might influence are the
moderates, they are the ones with atleast more than 2 braincells who dont fully buy the bobblehead over on fox with their talking points, those are the ones fox had best be worried about losing.

12. you can't fire Ailes
when almost every Fox News program leads their cable news rivals COMBINED, every night, month after month. Ailes is killing it. We can blame Fox News for being Fox News, but that's like blaming a snake for biting you in the ankle. Hey, it's a snake. That's what it does.

I blame CNN for running a shitty news network. MSNBC is the 'liberal' network, and they are ok. Maddow was a great addition. But CNN had/has a fantastic opportunity to attract a wide, moderate audience. And every night they just end up being Fox Lite. It's such a waste because they have a lot of talent there. It's just not positioned well.

16. The cable news business model created a niche market for republicans
By far the highest rated news shows are on broadcast tv watched by people who

1) can't afford the legal robbery called "cable service"
2) are sick and tired of the nightly insane asylum on cable.
3) are generally not OK wasting their time.

That leaves relatively well to do retirees and people who can't use the internet. so no wonder they lead CNN. If I'd like non nonsense journalism, why should I waste my time&money on CNN?! Most people who pay the extra costs of cable news do so because simple journalism and the facts don't reinforce their flawed view of reality.

New York – April 6, 2010 – “NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams” was the most watched network evening newscast for the week of March 29-April 4, 2010, according to Nielsen Media Research data. During the week, “Nightly” saw 7.746 million total viewers, +678,000 more than ABC “World News,’” 7.068 million and +2.586 million more than CBS “Evening News’” 5.160 million.

The O’Reilly Factor – 2,981,000 viewers (727,000) (1,463,000)
Campbell Brown – 574,000 viewers (157,000) (243,000)
Countdown w/ K. Olbermann – 1,182,000 viewers (288,000) (615,000)
ENRON: Smartest Guys – 240,000 viewers (122,000) (97,000)
Nancy Grace – 568,000 viewers (185,000) (308,000)

17. We have no choice where I live.
We are surrounded by mountains, and local ordinances prohibit putting up an antenna high enough to get TV strictly by broadcast. We are forced to go with either cable or satellite.

18. well, you are on DU, so you can clearly use the internet ;)
why do you pay for cable?! You are aware that part of your payment goes directly toward Billo's paycheck, while if you go to the websites the ad revenues go directly to your fav show! Broadband is enough for most of the news and the rest is just bad for you anyway ;)
