5. I wanna live there - and I do!

There are many nice tales to be told from Denmark, and we all need positive news. To see it is possible, and that somebody is living like this - which we are. We had a referendum, said no to nuclear energy and the grass roots started to build wind mills and ecological houses. And now the Danish wind mills are on the top of the word!

Denmark is the home of Hans Christian Andersen, but it is not all a fairy tale. Denmark did in fact invade Iraq, and we were the only country actually declaring war. To our excuse, an American bully tricked us in to doing that. We have a lot of oil our self in the North Sea - or we had, most of the profit goes to a single Danish company, who is not very good at paying the low taxes.
That company is also the worlds biggest shipping company, with lots of polluting crude oil tankers. When our government is bragging about industrial growth without pollution, they are calculating with those tankers as growth, but not putting the ships world wide pollution into accounting.
And the wind mills and other good environmental stuff are having a hard time the last ten years, since a conservative government decided green was bad. Again - they were deeply inspired by that American bully. Ever heard about the Skeptical Enviromentalist Bjørn Lomborg - the government took away green funding and gave it to him, and lately gave him even more, so he could give COP15 some hard opposition.

But the wind mills are still turning in our landscape, the streets are full of bicycles and all shops have ecological food. Especially compared to the USA, we Danes are living in a dream world. Many of us would like much more - but we do have accomplished a lot. Come and see!

I really appreciate you weighed in. very interesting comment! My feeling is that no place is perfect, but Skandinavia is pretty close. If you Danes only learned a lesson from the Norwegians on how to divvy up the north sea oil and do something like their central bank with the Petroleum Trust and pension plan that would be great and it would take away a lot of power from companies like http://www.dongenergy.dk/Pages/portalforside.aspx">Dong(look at all the windmills on this oil company's website!). I am sure there is a lot of talk about that in Denmark.

As for the american empire, that will be around for a while and all we can hope for and all we can work for here in the US is to make it as pacified and benevolent as possible. Unfortunately even if we could flip a switch tomorrow and have every country use 100% electric cars and solar panels or windmills, the empire will still be in business: you need lithium for batteries (50% of world reserves are in Bolivia and Chile), you need platinum for fuel cells, you need silver for solar panels and you need neodymium for the gear box in wind mills. In other words you need strategic resources for any techno fix you can think of and as long as that's the case the US empire will make sure that the mostly 3rd world sources of these resources price at least a strategically significant quantities in US$ which is then recycled in the imperial war machine.

you forgot to mention that the Danes invented Legos and also the nuclear scientist Neils Bohr - please forgive me if I mispelled his name.

I went to your lovely country in 2002 on a biking tour (6 days @ 30 miles each day). We specifically chose Denmark because we would learn so much about being green as well as being healthy...And we were not disappointed. We hope to return!
