- Although I'm straight, gay people are my people too. I won't deny them and I'll always stand with them. I have a family member who is gay and many good friends.

And religion (from where I grew-up immersed in and later shook off) and who are the bane of my existence for many reasons (all of them legitimate, mind you), are as guilty as any other of society's institutions because they give cover and sanctuary to bigots while remaining (and often closeted) bigoted themselves. It's time to stop this crap that's been going on.

I have only two regrets in all of this, the first one is that I didn't recognize my role and responsibility as a straight person to be outspoken about it sooner. Obnoxiously so, if need be. And I try to be now and will shame religious people about this issue at the drop of a hat. And the second is that mutants like Republican Log Cabin members will benefit from the sacrifices and venom that gay people have had to live with, once the chains of discrimination fall away. Even though they will not have lifted a damn finger to help achieve any of it. And yet as a black person who participated in the civil rights movement in the 60s and 70's I recognize the treatment, because we had our detractors from within who wanted us to "wait" and "not be so ugly and LOUD" about demanding our rights, as well.

And yet I'll be content nonetheless, because even cowards deserve to be free.....
