National Nurses United has launched a relief effort to send registered nurses to Haiti. Over 12,000 nurses have already answered the call. There’s just one problem: the cost of sending them. Every dollar you donate will go to providing the resources nurses need to care for the survivors of this tragedy.

1. Not to be snarky, but....
Wouldn't the money go farther if you just got the nurses a direct ticket from Manila to Port-a-Prince, without the stop in California?

3. I'm extrapolating
California is already importing large numbers of nurses from the Philippines (and other low wage countries, because hospitals want to squeeze wages), and is not really in a position to export workers. Donors could fund two or three times the number of nurses if they went directly from low wage countries to Haiti.

I'm not exactly sure how a volunteer nurse program to Haiti could be used to break a nurse's union in the U.S., but if there is, management will find it.
