Matthews: The netroots ‘get their giggles from sitting in the backseat and bitching.’

Today on MSNBC’s Hardball, Chris Matthews brought on John Heilemann from the New Yorker to talk about President Obama’s popularity with Democrats. When Heilemann noted that the “Democratic left” has been “trashing the health care bill” this week, Matthews said that those people were part of the “netroots” and not “regular grown-up Democrats”:

MATTHEWS: I don’t consider them Democrats, I consider them netroots, and they’re different. And if I see that they vote in every election or most elections, I’ll be worried. But I’m not sure that they’re regular grown-up Democrats. I think that a lot of those people are troublemakers who love to sit in the backseat and complain. They’re not interested in governing this country. They never ran for office, they’re not interested in working for somebody in public office. They get their giggles from sitting in the backseat and bitching.

1. if I hadn't just seen it, I wouldn't believe it - dismissing his audience like that?
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 06:09 PM by tomm2thumbs

does he REALLY think republicans are watching his show - and the lead in to the Ed Show is filled with back seat gripers who don't vote?

wow - his utter stupidity fails him

and this after calling West Point 'the enemy camp' - is Glenn Beck hiring?

Matthews is a 'regular grown-up Democrat' who had orgasms over George W. Bush.
What absolute nonsense.

16. He made a fool of himself last night with Dean - Dean tried to discuss the bill

And, he kept over & over & over saying he was afraid to take on Lieberman.

It was the sorriest most pathetic thing.

He also claimed Bernacke was responsible for saving the economy. He is an embarrassment to MSNBC.

36. Damn straight we'll be Obama's undoing if this shit doesn't stop
We had a lot to do with putting him in office and we'll have a lot to do with NOT putting him back into office if this shit doesn't stop.

I spent a lot of money I didn't even have, and a lot of time that I should have been sleeping working for the Obama campaign. If he doesn't veto this crap I'm taking my ball and going home.

49. Hehe always loved that pic. I think that many if not most of us do things offline as well
Such as make phone calls, canvass streets, donate money, do data entry, etc.

Go ahead and side with tweety if you want - posting on boards doesn't matter but most don't post if they don't care. People who care tend to do, or not do things to help with campaigns. Piss them off enough and they tend to do things to work AGAINST campaigns.

So during the Obama campaign the online work was pivotal, but now that the net roots is turning against his corporate bullshit we're insignificant?

Huh?

45. Bullshit!
I've been voting since I turned 18. Tweety is talking out of his ass which is not really unusual for him. Quite frankly, I find him to be like a dog that tries to hump everything, generally annoying and only occasionally getting it right. There's nothing on any person that would scream "net roots" and the same people who bitch online were also bitching offline as well but when they did so they were ignored. Tweety can take his analysis and shove it up his ass since it's not worth shit to begin with.

22. Matthews hasn't followed healthcare that much
He spends his time speculating on Palins next or last move. Loves gotcha politics, mostly gossip stuff.
Now he gets in because of all the uproar about healthcare. He wants this to pass because he knows what will happen to dems in 2010 if it does not. Obamas next two years will be difficult and probably his last two years in office, with fewer democrats. What they should do is run liberals in those blue dog states, even if they lose; the dems won't have to be blamed for republican vote they get from republicans.
Right now all the democrats are getting blamed for blue dog democratic tail. They are against the president and their leadership. They are the independents who hold out to be bought out.

Generally I think it's better to be knowledgeable about those that oppose and
disagree with you (regardless of their douche-ity).
It's good to know them and their arguments (even when they don't actually have one...well, one that
isn't ad hominem)

34. For your information, Matthews, I'm 66, a lifelong Democrat and a lawyer.
I speak two languages other than English fluently, have various academic degrees, raised two wonderful children and enjoy a marriage of more than 45 years. In short, I'm a serious person. Matthews, I'll match you any day when it comes to education.

Further, I am not just a back-seat blogger. I have been a delegate to a Democratic State Convention, worked in most of the recent elections, walked precincts, etc. In 2004, on election day alone, I walked three, that's three precincts talking to voters and handing out GOTV literature.

I table for candidates and causes that I believe in -- standing for hours in the cold and the heat talking to people. I know for a fact that I am persuasive and personable and a very effective campaigner.

One of my most memorable experiences was meeting President Carter's mother Lillian while tabling for McGovern many years ago. That's how far back I go.

When is the last time that Matthews met, much less talked to, a grass-roots activist like me? Own up, Matthews. You are a snob. You have lost contact with us real people. You look down on us -- from a height supported only by your salary, not your knowledge or commitment.

Matthews is where he is because he was lucky. I'm sure he worked hard to get himself into a position in which he can opine on how inadequate the rest of us are. But many of us have worked just as hard in our lives but simply not had his luck. Frankly, I think he lacks the qualifications to judge us.

41. Same here.
Not to mention the fact that a huge majority of the party activists in my state are involved because of Howard Dean. That's why Dean got elected chair. He brought great numbers of activists back to the party when no one else saw it as relevant.

Tweety, et al, dismiss them at their peril.

35. I have spent a lifetime in the "backseat"
but I have not been "Giggling". My time have been spent worrying.
Will my son die while waiting for my Insurance Company to approve needed critical care and medication.
Will my daughter ever see equal rights in her lifetime.
I have spent the last 19 years working for health care reform and 15 years for equal rights for my daughter.
Where were you Chris, 19 years ago when I first started writing letters and speaking out against Health Insurance Companies (not to mention over a ten year battle with my Insurance Company)?
The Media wasn't interested. Only a few were willing to report or fight against the Insurance Companies in the early 90's.
Where were you Chris, 15 years ago (hell where are you today on this issue) when many Gays were being raped, beaten, murdered and our justice system ignored it.

Hell yes I'm bitching, because I no longer want to sit in the backseat while you total the car I spent almost 20 years working for.
But make no mistake I'm not "giggling". I'm angry and this regular grown-up Democrat has no problem taking the keys and driving away. You should be worried because I do vote in every election and have since 1972.

40. That was insulting. He said it after he was insulted by Rep Weiner
who said Mathews was neither perfect, and not very good at what he does (paraphrasing).

This was in reference to the saying 'don't let the perfect get in the way of the good'

Anyway, I think Weiner's words stung, and Mathews didn't like it. But Mathews was disrespectful to Weiner during the interview.
