1. needs synop for our dial up folks! Basically video is George
Carlin telling it like it is - from the Reagan administration on. He names and shames. The video has pics and the numbers to back up what Carlin is talking about.
Great for a laugh if it wasnt so true that it makes you want to cry *sigh*

Hope that helps
Cheers
Sandy

2. I haven't double checked this
For complete accuracy, but here is a transcript of the bit he his doing.

I really haven't seen this many people in one place since they took the group photographs of all the criminals and law-breakers in the Ronald Reagan administration. Yeah! Yeah! 225 of 'em so far! 225 different people in the Ronald Reagan administration have either quit, been fired, been arrested, indicted, or convicted of either breaking the law or violating the Ethics Code! 225 of 'em! And Edwin Meese alone... Edwin Meese alone has been investigated by three separate Special Prosecutors and there's a fourth one waiting for him in Washington right now. Three separate Special Prosecutors have had to look into the activities of the Attorney General, and the Attorney General is the nation's leading law enforcement officer!

See that's what you've got to remember, this is the Ronald Reagan administration we're talking about. These are the Law and Order people! These are the people who are against street crime! They want to put street criminals in jail to make life safer for the business criminals! Yeah! They're against street crime, provided that street isn't Wall Street.

And the Supreme Court decided about a year ago that it's all right to put people in jail now if we just think they're going to commit a crime. It's called preventive detention. All you've got to do now is just think they're going to commit a crime. Well if we'd known this seven or eight years ago we could have put a bunch of these Republican motherfuckers directly into prison Yeah! put 'em in the joint where they belong and we could have saved the expense of putting these pin-headed assholes on trial. Another thing you gotta remember is these are the people elected with the help of the Moral Majority. Elected with the help of the Moral Majority and -- the Teamster's Union. That's a good combination. Organized Religion and Organized Crime working together to help build a better America.

They were going to get government off our backs. Yeah, but when it comes to abortion they don't mind government being in a woman's uterus, do they? Yeah, backs are no good, but uterus is ok by them. These people call themselves Right to Lifers. Don't you love that phrase, and don't you love the way these kind of people pervert the English language? Right to Lifers? Don't you realize that most of the Right to Lifers are in favor of the death penalty, and they support the South American death squads, and they're against gun control, and they're against nuclear weapons control. When they say Right to Life they're talking about their right to decide which people should live or die.

So these right-wingers, you know, so these Reagan people, these right-wingers in general, these crypto-Fascists, they're against homosexuality, they're against pornography, they're against sex education, they're against abortion, yeah they're going to get government off your back but they're going to tell you how to live your sex life. And let me ask you this, how would they know anything about it? Have you ever taken a look at those people? No wonder they're afraid of their bodies, take a look at 'em! Doesn't it strike as mildly ironic that most of the people who are against abortion are people you wouldn't want to fuck in the first place?

Hey, I'm the first one to say it's a great country, but it's a stra-a-ange culture. We got a strange culture. ... This is a country where tobacco kills 400,000 people a year -- so they ban artifical sweeteners! Because a rat died! Know what I mean? This is a place where gun store owners are given a list of stolen credit cards, but not a list of criminals and maniacs! And now they're thinking about banning toys guns, and they're going to keep the fucking real ones!! This is a place where alcohol ruins more lives than cancer, and everybody gets upset when some athlete gets hooked on cocaine. You know Time Magazine and Newsweek put cocaine on the cover, but they put the liquor advertisements inside the magazine.
It's the old American double standard, you know say one thing and do something different. And of course the country is founded on the double standard, that's our history, we were founded on a very basic double standard. This country was founded by slave owners who wanted to be free. Am I right? A group of slave owners who wanted to be free. So they killed a lot of white English people, in order to continue owning their black African people, so they could wipe out the rest of the red Indian people, and move west and steal the rest of the land from the brown Mexican people, giving them a place to take off and drop their nuclear weapons on the yellow Japanese people. You know what the motto of this country ought to be? You give us a color, we'll wipe it out!

38. If I'm not mistaken, the Clinton Administration broke that record of 225
administration have either quit, been fired, been arrested, indicted, or convicted of either breaking the law or violating the Ethics Code, and I'd be shocked if the * Administration hadn't broken Clinton's record. The only thing that may be holding * back is a bunch of things that still need to be investigated.

60. And i'm not
"quit, been fired, been arrested, indicted, or convicted of either breaking the law or violating the Ethics Code". The big one for Clinton was quit, there was a tremendous turnover during his time in the cabinet alone, not counting all the others in his administration. He had 43 different people in the cabinet, and that's not even counting all the deputies and assistants. Add in the arrested, indicted or convicted and I'd be surprise if it was under. Information gets out faster these days and it's harder to squash an investigation than it used to be. Add to that the tremendous amount of money someone with political connections can make in the private sector, and I expect this trend to continue.

63. I don't get where you're going here...
arrested, indicted, or convicted.

Was Hubbell in the administration? Was he arrested, indicted or Convicted (yes, yes and plead guilty). Bartcop mentions it but doesn't count it for some reason. I don't think the criteria Bartcop is using is the same as the one Carlin is using.

Also, Clinton got a censure from the Senate. Carlin is talking about ethics violations as well, Bartcop doesn't seem to be counting those.

It's 2 different standards. Carlin's criteria covers everything from someone stepping down to make more money in the private sector, to being frogmarched out of the Whitehouse under armed guard.

Carlin's also talking about resignations (and this is the big one). Clinton had a substantial turnover both in his cabinet members and his deputies and undersecretaries. I would not be surprised if the administration had 225 resignations completely unrelated to any scandal at all. Let alone the indictments, convictions, arrests or ethics violations.

One more note, in the video at the very beginning, it indicates "By the end of his term, 138 Reagan administration officials have been convicted, indicted, or had been the subject of official investigations for offical misconduct and/or criminal violations."

So whoever put together the video, and I'm not sure who that was, is going with a lower number (138), counting not just convictions or indictments, but also just being investigated, and based on the list, is not just counting administration officials but lobbyists as well.

What's the criteria I need to provide evidence for? It would seem like I'd get to use the "Carlin standard" and count anyone who falls into any one of these categories: quit, fired, indicted, arrested, convicted, plead guilty, or charged with a crime or Ethics violations and was a member of the administration. If I also get to count what the text in the video is including, I can also count those who were the subject of an official investigation as well as lobbyists who were not in the adminstartion. I'm not sure if they fall into more than one category I can count them more than once, but it doesn't seem right to do that.

That's casting a pretty wide net.

"been arrested, indicted, or convicted of either breaking the law or violating the Ethics Code"... and all you give me is Hubbell---a guy who committed his crime before he was in the Clinton Administration.

Seriously---is that all you got?

65. Based on the criteria
I said at the outset that I thought the big one for the Clinton administration was going to be RESIGNED. There was a lot of turnover. Sure Hubbell was convicted but your source doesn't even count him at all, so clearly Bartcop (and I don't doubt the accuracy of their information) and Carlin are using different standards. Since its a a comedy bit, and not an actual political argument, we don't know who or what he's including or excluding, but it seems like if 32 Reagan administration officials were convicted and the number he has is 225 as a total number, there's a lot that goes into this number beyond just convictions. According to the video, some of those people are lobbyists and NOT actually part of the Reagan administration, but they're part of the number the video cites.

My point is this, yes the Reagan administration was incredibly corrupt, but if you want to lower the bar from just convictions, to include indictments, to include investigations, to include resignations and include ethics investigations and then include people not even in the administration as well, you can paint a picture any way you want.

If this bit makes a comeback, expect in 2 years some repuke has the Obama administration at 226 counting every deputy-undersecretary's assistant that resigned to take a job in the private sector (even if there's not a single scandal). Carlin's criteria, while perfect for his bit, is not sufficient to base a political argument upon without considerably more information.

67. And obviously, those are the numbers that count.
I 100% agree. I think Carlin's bit is great. I just don't think it's a good basis for a political argument without more information.

Comparing the number of convictions alone makes for a pretty strong argument, why bring investigations and resignations into it which may have nothing to do with any actual wrongdoing.

And I did watch him from the bugining....starting when he came on Carson the first time....and then the Hippie Dippy Weatherman....but during the Viet Nam War he became political and started speaking out with that biting humor.
And the Seven things you cannot say on TV...was the opening shot of a long carrier of political observations.

He was a funny man with a deadly serious mind.

George Carlin's career is a gift to comedians; but also a great reminder to the rest of us, to always question authority and demand that it answer for duplicity of messages and actions and complicity of spirit to its financiers.

18. losses
To my mind two of the greatest losses suffered by American society recently were George Carlin and Kurt Vonnegut. Both had a facility for causing people to see the harshest truths in a light made less painful by the gentleness of their humor. We are less for those two being gone, but more for their having been here at all.

I always found myself agreeing with both Carlin and Vonnegut's observations, and secretly hating them, for being able to express in such an eloquently artistic (and let's be honest, worth sharing) form, the same feelings I tried in vain to string on writing.
