Now that we're done giving Thanks, I think we should take a moment to point out some things that need changing about the holidays. http://www.britethorn.com

4. Costco
One of the things I like about Costco is that they close on all the major holidays, including the 4th of July, Memorial Day and Thanksgiving. And amazingly, their stock keeps going higher and higher.

2. Britehorn, your snark is great however. . .
There are many of us who simply are not or do not celebrate these holidays, Thanksgiving is for family gathering, there are many with no families within reach to gather with. Regarding Christmas, some of us don't recognize religions or the related holidays....

I for one am thankful that I can go to bowling alley, the store, the theaters, and so on rather than set around at home feeling depressed and isolated because anyone else who might want company is forced to stay at home isolated and depressed.

Furthermore, things like theaters are a godsend on holidays when one has children or children are part of the gathering. By mid to late afternoon, they are usually antsy, tired of football on the tv. It was almost a ritual for the non-football spectators to take the children to the movies back in the day when they were still children.

For grocers and such, sometimes cooks have all they need and just screw up, should they be forced to present a screwed up dinner because the grocers are closed? Or perhaps someone shows up with a special need that requires an unexpected change to the menu.

Just saying, if they didn't have the business, (ie someone either needed or wanted their services or products) they wouldn't stay open. And being part of the group(s) that partake in the utilization of many businesses open on holidays, I resent the idea that you think they should all close and those employees don't get paid for that day, and I get stuck at home.

3. Good points -
a friend of mine found out that her turkey was rotted and had to go out and get another one, so it happens. I also used to go to the movies on Christmas (back when I was a teen in the 80's). We had no family and we would want to do something special. That said, Britehorn does make a valid point about the greed in general.

5. He does make that point well, but the greed of the corps does
give those employees either extra income, or maintains their income rather than being shorted those closed days. I think perhaps he may not realize that hourly workers don't get paid holidays.

6. Hourly Workers
I am well aware of the fact that hourly workers don't get paid for working holidays. I've been there myself and have a lot of friends who were and still are there. Most of them would rather have the day off, even without the money. But if they do have to work, they should be getting double time for it, which VERY few of them do.
