As environmental issues become more pressing, there are two possible responses: forget it and hope that government and corporations will figure it out, or take action yourself.

In the “take action yourself” camp, a few individuals are leading the way. One such person in California is Ed Begley, Jr.
Environmental lawyer and long-time friend, Bobby Kennedy, Jr. has said “Ed has a greater sense of social obligation than anyone I know. He’s like a West Coast cadet who gets up every morning and says ‘reporting for duty’”.

Turning up at Hollywood events on his bicycle, Ed has been considered an environmental leader in the Hollywood community for many years. He has served as chairman of the Environmental Media Association, and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. He still serves on those boards, as well as the Thoreau Institute, the Earth Communications
Office, Tree People and Friends of the Earth, among many others.

His work in the environmental community has earned him a number of awards from some of the most prestigious environmental groups in the nation, including the California League of Conservation Voters, the Natural Resources Defense Council, The Coalition for Clean Air, Heal the Bay and the Santa Monica Baykeeper.

He currently lives near Los Angeles in a self-sufficient home powered by solar energy.

1. Eww, be afraid of the government bulb nazi's. Someone came in his house
and took his brain.

I can use that idiot logic, too. Nixon forced his way into my and made me ration gas. Only Nixon really did called for a national gas rationing. I can't start to be as illogically inane as these people.

2. First they come for the lightbulbs
Then they come for the boobies and uteruses of your female family members (I actually heard this one on RW radio the other day).

They are also going to force everyone to wear Snuggies. RED SNUGGIES.

3. EU ban traditional light bulbs
Edited on Wed Nov-25-09 08:04 AM by MrObama
The European Union is phasing out traditional light bulbs over the next three years in favour of a new generation of energy-efficient lighting.

Under new rules coming into force in September, manufacturers and importers can no longer sell clear incandescent light bulbs of 100 watts or above in the EU. However, shops may continue to sell bulbs already in stock.

Part of an effort to save energy and fight climate change, the ban will be expanded in September 2011 and 2012 to include lower wattages of clear incandescent bulbs. Frosted bulbs and high-energy halogen lights are also being phased out.

By 2020 the measures will save enough energy to power 11 million households every year. This will reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 15 million tons each year.

10. Here is the entire key to the core failure of the conservative ideology
they don't CARE AT ALL about the common good, the environment, the oceans, or sustainability.. Only Their INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM to do whatever the fuck they want- regardless of the consequences for others or the environment. IT's shameful immoral selfishness. Varney's exaggerated fear that is government is going to come into his house with a swat team to take away his precious energy wasteful light bulbs sometime in the imaginary future was a perfect anecdote for the failure of the right's core ideology and mentality. I with I watched the whole interview yesterday and Begley TOTALLY Pwned him. This is the kind of passion and intelligence we need for the good fight.

9. No more incandescent bulbs?
It's like real health care reform. It will never happen in this country as long as GE can afford high priced lobbyists to purchase lawmakers.

11. Now THAT'S how you talk back to a loudmouth wingnut!
Too many times the meek and nice progressive or Democrat sits there like a deer in the headlights while having his/her facts run over by some talking point screaming liar from the other side.

I think some on this side WISH we could have a calm debate, because we know we would win that with facts, but the other side knows they have jack shit to back up what they are saying and HAVE to scream and bully. Sadly we have to stoop to their level to communicate, however muted that communication method is. We need more Begleys, Moores, Graysons, and less Kerrys, Reids, and Conyers.

13. Tell you what, Stu....
If you want your incandescent bulbs so much, you're free to set up a workshop in your garage or basement or whatever and make your own, and no "bulb nazis" are going to come by and take them away. But at the interstate, mass-production level? Yeah, the government gets to set standards, including efficiency.

15. But I need incandescent bulbs. although i use floresent in my home, I use incandescent to provide
heat for my cat's home in my garage, and to heat my hot tube pump shack and some times to keep my car from freezing up outside in the winter.

16. I tried to be all green and everything--but one day about 6 weeks
ago, one of my compact fluorescent bulbs in the bathroom just freakin' exploded! Half of the bulb exploded into a bunch of tiny pieces, flames shot out as it exploded, and smoke poured out of what remained. The remainder of the bulb was still screwed into the socket--and still extremely hot--but I felt I had to get it out of there before more toxic smoke poured into the bathroom. (I feared it might harm my cats.) I got a dishtowel, folded it, and used it to remove the rest of the bulb--no easy task because in addition to being hot, it was all sharp broken glass.

I ended up replacing all my compact fluorescents with old-fashioned incandescent bulbs. Suppose I had forgotten to turn off a light when I left the house sometime and another compact fluorescent bulb had exploded while I was away from home? I shudder to think of what might have happened--a fire? Cats dead from toxic fumes? I honestly had no idea they could explode like that--and I wonder whether other people relaize it.
