Grandpa Siset spoke to me
early one morning, at the front door
while we were waiting for the dawn
and we saw cars passing by

- Siset, do you see the stake
to which we are all tied?
If we cannot free ourselves
we won't be able to make way!

- If we all pull on it, it will fall
and it can't last very long,
surely it will fall, fall, fall,
it must be very rotten by now.

If I pull it hard this way,
and you pull it hard that way,
surely it will fall, fall, fall,
and we'll be free again!

- But it's been a long time, now!
My hands are peeling!
And when my force goes
it's seems wider and bigger.

Yes I know it's rotten,
but you know, Siset, it's seems so heavy,
sometimes my strength leaves me.
So sing your song again to me:

- If we all pull on it, it will fall
and it can't last very long,
surely it will fall, fall, fall,
it must be very rotten by now.

If I pull it hard this way,
and you pull it hard that way,
surely it will fall, fall, fall,
and we'll be free again!

- Grandpa Siset doesn't speak anymore
An ill wind has taken him away
he, who knew how,
and me, here at this door
and when children pass by

I stretch my neck to sing to them
Siset's last song
the last thing he taught me.

- If we all pull on it, it will fall
and it can't last very long,
surely it will fall, fall, fall,
it must be very rotten by now.

If I pull it hard this way,
and you pull it hard that way,
surely it will fall, fall, fall,
and we'll be free again!

PS: When Lluís Llach thanks the Republicans, he is speaking to the Spanish Republicans who stood against Francisco Franco, not the sad shadows of Republicanism we have in the USA. If there is anything close to the Spanish Republicans, it is the American Democrats.
