1. Because we understand so little about science it is better to be more careful in
deciding whom we remove from life support and whom we don't.

7. I just finished reading
"Johnny Got His Gun" the novel by Dalton Trumbo a few days before this story broke. The timing really made this story hit me. I didn't realize it had been made a movie, I'll have to look for it.

8. Take a look on Amazon or some other such site. Very good, but............
................extremely depressing (and meant to be that way) story. The movie was done if I remember right in the 80's and again (memory fading) I think it starred one of the Bottom brothers.

3. My brother has been in a similar state for about half as long.
One of the songs my brother used to play before it happened was Metallica's "One." Very ironic. I've been scared for the last 15 years that my brother was in the same circumstances as this poor man: awake but unable to communicate. Death is one thing but being trapped inside yourself for 23 years has to be one of the biggest horrors of all time. I can't imagine how he kept his sanity.

The doctors aren't to blame though. He obviously had no way to communicate for most of that time.

I dream that some day maybe my brother would be able to communicate with us again. I literally dream that he can and then falls back into silence.

I was a little disturbed by Cenk's humor but I know it's just a way of distancing yourself from something that's so painful to imagine.

11. There are unfortunately people who prey on that sort of hope

It would be interesting to say something to him in the absence of his "keyboard facilitator", and then have the "facilitator" come back in and ask him to type what he was just told.

4. Locked in syndrome?
This would be one of my worst fears. We had a locked in syndrome patient at the hospital I worked at as a nurse assistant.

He could move his eyes, but that was all, but most appear to be in a coma while they're not, they are conscious.

I know it's off topic, but if I were a Republican I'd suggest she run for President.
