Camelot Era idealism. Also Camelot Era sexism, as the cartoon producers saw fit to remove the female characters from the cast.

Of course the Wizard of Oz has often been interpreted politically--the Wizard being a W.J. Bryan like huckster, the Straw and Tin Men being farm and labor factions of the Midwest, and the Lion representing the Gilded Age Democrats. Frank Baum always disclaimed these interpretations, but Oz and politics are just a good fit.

Even Toto and Dorothy seem to be natural analogues to two notorious political figures....
