Blackburn says mammogram rec leads to rationing

“This is how rationing begins. This is the little toe in the edge of the water,” said Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) at a press conference on Capitol Hill. “This is when you start getting a bureaucrat between you and your physician. This is what we have warned about.”

From Think Progress:

On MSNBC this afternoon, Dr. Nancy Snyderman took Blackburn to task for getting the “public health message lost in the politics.” “Now, there’s nothing that came out of this panel recommending rationing,” said Snyderman. “Just a prudent use of screening tests.” When Blackburn tried to claim that the guidelines meant “bureaucrats deciding what they’re going to allow,” Snyderman pointed out that Blackburn was acting as a “bureaucrat” standing between patients and “the best possible evidence”. <...>

As the Washington Independent’s Mike Lillis notes, the concern of the congresswomen about rationed mammograms is especially ironic considering that they oppose legislation that “would require insurance companies that cover diagnostic mammograms also to cover routine, annual breast cancer screenings for all women 40 and older.”

1. the GOP will use anything as a political football

I don't believe that guidelines which might limit options to patients are a good idea, nor do I think Blackburn is being any other than genuine on her views that she doesn't agree with those guidelines. But how she then takes her opinion and manipulates it into a talking point of rationing IS a ridiculous, and conniving attempt to scare people away from health care altogether. How about inserting an amendment that says 'no guideline from any agency will serve to override options available to a doctor as legitimate treatment for patient care'.

The OP's note about the irony of Blackburn's opposition to coverage in general is telling. Basically 'we don't want to slowly restrict a woman's options... we prefer to suffocate them entirely from having ANY options'.

3. Anyone who can take down Marsha Blackburn is
a hero in my book. Blackburn is a very much driven egotistical sham of a woman.

Rethinking the Mammogram Guidelines

"Sweden is the birthplace of mammography, and the Swedish mammography trials, which have monitored some 265,000 women in Malmo, Stockholm, Goteborg and other Swedish cities for nearly 30 years, are accepted by physicians and researchers worldwide as the most authoritative.

When I visited Nystrom that frigid winter, he and several distinguished Swedish colleagues were preparing to publish a periodic update of five of the six major Swedish trials.

Their conclusion, which the update itself called "surprising": there was "virtually no" benefit from mammograms for women under 55."

That was more than seven years ago.
