1. The problem with such analogies is that it contains errors.

First, the country has been carried to the right by both parties since Reagan. The hard right has legislative victories and election victories such as bush/Cheney. The activist "left" has had no legislative victories of import for the last 30 years or so. The activist "left" isn't an extreme position anymore unless the world is extreme.
