Ohio Senate candidate Jennifer Brunner: a strong supporter of marriage equality (since 1989!)

Ohio Sec. of State Jennifer Brunner is running for the Senate seat being vacated by George Voinovich (R).

There are Democrats you grudgingly support just because they are Democrats, and then there are those you willingly support because they are outspoken champions for progressive ideals, and you know they will not only say the right things but will be outspoken leaders and fight for social justice and change.

Ohio is lucky to have one Senator who is clearly in the second category, Sherrod Brown. The Democratic primary for the seat being vacated by retiring GOP "moderate" George Voinvovich in 2010 provides an opportunity to elect another, Ohio Secretary of State and JFK Profiles in Courage Award winner Jennifer Brunner.

Jennifer Brunner is not one to hesitate about taking bold stands on progressive issues, whether politically expedient or not. She is an outspoken proponent of marriage equality, and has been since 1989. This is not something you can say about many candidates, and certainly not about opponent Lee Fisher, who had this to say about marriage equality: “I am in favor of civil unions, but I have questions about marriage.”

2. I met her a couple of times while working for another state-wide

campaign in Ohio.

She is facing a tough primary with lt. gov. Lee Fisher.

The only problem I have with her running now is it puts the SOS office at risk and since it is pat of the panel that redraws the districts after each census, her move could prove costly to the democratic party here in Ohio.

But then again, if not now when. Senate Seats don't change all that often and I guess you have to take the chance when it comes.
